When choosing the few valuable spells for a sorcerer, do you replace misty step with dimension door at higher level or simply keep misty step for battlefield mobility? I guess it boils down to do you sacrifice bonus action casting for distance and carrying another person? (You could quicken it but then you’re using a 4th lvl spell and 2 sorc pts)
Which spell do you end up using more in actual play?
Dimension Door is definitely more versatile - don't forget it also lets you choose a location you can't see.
Depends on whether you have higher priorities for your 4th or 2nd level slots. I personally would swap, or even keep both (mobility is really helpful), but it does mean giving up on Banishment, Greater Invisibility, Polymorph... come to think, if my Sorcerer had Twinned Spell, I would probably refrain from taking Dimension Door just because 4th level is so clutch for twinning, expensive or no.
Dimension Door. Bringing an ally with you when applicable, having 400 feet to work with, and being able to teleport without having to see where you're going is immensely useful. I find Misty Step to be kind of a niche. The only time I ever had to use it was getting across small gaps that I didn't want to try and jump for, but its use beyond that has been more limited. Its good to make a quick getaway without burning a 4th level spell, but just teleporting 30 feet and having that be your turn is going to be your entire turn sans a Cantrip isn't great.
Worth noting, my Sorcerer was a multiclassed character, so his usage of both Spells are kind of hard to gauge with how normal spellcasters would use them. His entire shtick was teleport spamming all over the place with quickened spells when applicable, and going in for a melee attack, so not exactly what most spell casters are going to do with the spell. I was crushed when Steel Wind Strike is a Ranger/Wizard spell only, since it fit that character to a T.
I love how both of your topics apply to the same character I had though.
I’m playing a Warlock, not a Sorcerer, so the spell level isn’t an issue for me. But I only have 2 spell slots and I have very few known spells which are issues. When I hit 7th level I’m keeping Misty Step and adding Dimension Door because Misty Step can be cast as a Bonus action allowing me to still get a shot off with a crossbow or pour a healing potion down the throat of someone who is at 0 HP when I use it.
The spells are different enough that I’d suggest keeping both of them. There are situations where each one is the better choice.
The situation for Sorcerers is a little different though, since both can be used as a Bonus Action, albeit by using finite resources. It'd entirely depend on how mobile you may think you need to be. If they're going the support route, having both would be handy since buffing spells generally happen on touch, unless they take the Distant Metamagic option as well.
The bonus action is far more important than the limited range.
In combat you are either on offense or defense. Bonus Action lets you attack and teleport or let's you cast a defensive spell and teleport.
The range is not really 30 ft for Misty Step, because you can also take a move, or even a Dash. When I have to run, I Misty out of AoO range, then dash for a total of 90 ft.
Dimension Door only wins if you also have Quicken. Then it works.
I was looking at both those. I decided to go with Fly. I really want to use Thunderstep but Fly is just more utilitarian and with limited resources I want most my spells to have multiple applicability. My one regret at the moment is not going with Lightning Bolt for its variant damage over Thunderbolt. I know I can swap it later but I should have thought harder on having another damage spell than fire. Same thing goes with Misty Step and Dimension Door. DD is fighting with too many other good utility spells. Misty Step lower level makes it the better of the two in my opinion given a look at the bigger picture.

See how far misty step gets you in front of Vecna. You need dimension door when it gets serious.
mid lows misty works.
