Sorcerers have the full spellcasting progression; any changes to the Spellcasting feature will have a big impact on the class.
Like bards, sorcerers are have a limitation on the number of spells they can choose from, which is a major restriction on the class.
The sorcerer does not get many metamagic choices. When you create a new metamagic option, be sure that it is useful enough that a sorcerer could justify using one of his or her precious choices on it.
Sorcery points and Flexible Casting were intentionally designed so that a sorcerer who does nothing but convert spell slots to sorcery points in order to cast higher-level spells does so at the cost of overall output. Be cautious when altering this balance.

I am currently running a 2nd level draconian sorcerer. Knowing the limitations he has, I made him a battle sorcerer so if by chance he runs out of spells, he can still use his short sword. I do agree that sorcerers are not up to par with other magic users.

Elon Andrael- High Elf sorcerer- Waterdeep Dragon Heist
Tomac- goliath barbarian- Yet Another Storm Kings Thunder
For my group that I DM for I made a spell list like the cleric gets( ones that are always prepared) for all the bloodlines and but don't counts towards spells known it seems to be a good fit a least for my group. Me personally I would have like some more metamagic options but that's me
I'm amazed I'm in such a small minority that likes sorcerers as they are. The point is that they're not wizards with a different backstory; they're distinct. Honestly, I've gotten so much mileage out of my spells known, and having a small repertoire has encouraged me to use spells more creatively. I'm having a blast with my sorcerer. Perhaps I'm alone in this!
At high levels, Font of Magic opens up some crazy flexibility, for either epic use of metamagick'd spells at climactic moments, or to pluck additional spell slots out of thin air.
It might offer some flexibility at higher levels, yes. Given the fact that you even MAKE it to those levels. Also, in a party of three people, it's not that easy to pick fixed spells of which you can cast multiple copies. Also, pick spells which are useful in many situations.

In this thread, I suggested a feat for sorcerers that would do just that.
My girlfriend/GM used this on me 2 sessions ago. My Tiefling sorceress faceplanted on the floor and didn't wake up for the duration.

Feel free to use it for your own campaign if you want to.

My main issue with them is why can't they fully play to their sub class themes?
Why don't storm sorcerers have call lightning, control weather, maelstrom, storm of vengeance, wind walk, wind wall and so on.
Why don't shadow sorcerers have arms of hadar, hunger of hadar, black tentacles, maddening darkness, shadow of moil and so on.
At least with divine they just gave them the whole cleric list...
