I have built a Hexblade Warlock on the website, but when I go to select my 1st level spells Wrathful Smite is not available. I realize this is a paladin spell, but the expanded spell list calls it out as an option (shield is listed and DOES show up in my 1st level spells). Any idea why this isn't available?
Wrathful Smite was printed in the Player's Handbook. It is not available for selection unless you have purchased that source.
When Wizards of the Coast creates new books (such as Xanathar's Guide to Everything where Hexblade was printed), they design with the Player's Handbook in mind. This means options that are not present in the free Basic Rules and SRD may also be included.
