It appeared in some UA articles a long time ago and i am curious as to why it never made it into xanatars guide to everything like the other invocations that were released about the same time, was it simply too strong as an free quickened spell for doing what you were gonna use your action for anyway? Were they worried about non fiend warlocks getting their hands on fireball? Was it considered too uninteresting by players or too specific to the fiend warlock?

i am soup, with too many ideas (all of them very spicy) who has made sufficient homebrew material and character to last an thousand human lifetimes
The feedback was that many players hated Invocations that were tied to specific Patrons, so they killed them all. The Invocations, not the players.
Cloak of baalzebul (now cloak of flies), aspect of the Moon, frost Lance, grasp of hadar and many others all initially started as patron- exclusive invocations in the warlock and wizard UA article, this invocation was introduced then. Later, in the areticle "revised class options" all of these options reappeared without the restrictions on patron, including kiss of Mephistopheles, and kiss of Mephistopheles was the only option from revised class options that did not make it into xanatars guide to everything, despite no longer being restricted by subclass just like how aspect of the Moon no longer being that. The invocation must have been dropped for Another reason than being patron dependent especially becuase the latest iteration of it was in no way specific to any particular patron and could be chosen by any 5th level warlock who knows the eldrich blast cantrip

Just reading about the Invocation. Damn, that's a cool Invocation.
Anyway, apparently it was a bit too powerful.
