WoTC published another that said it was opinion. Then Crawford said, iin another tweet, that it was his opinion and wasn't official. Thenn in the latest eratta, at least that I'm aware of as I haven't found anything dated later. It was broadly stated as opinion again. From what I gather, they want leave it up to the individual DM. If you want at least a better history, hop over to the other thread and start there.

Do you have a link to that?
Sage Advice Compendium - note it's dated 2020, but the link for 2021 brings back the same doc. Either they haven't updated the doc at all, or the link is wrong.
As I said earlier, the whole magic missile argument has played out a number of times on various threads.

I have read that compendium already. None of the text substantiates any of what you claimed in red.
And yes, I know the topic has been debated on the internet. That is not an argument.

You can search Crawford's tweet for him stating that it was opinion. WotC official answer is Crawford's opinion weighs more, but is still not official until published,
"Official Rulings
Official rulings on how to interpret rules are made here in the Sage Advice Compendium. A Dungeon Master adjudicates the game and determines whether to use an official ruling in play. The DM always has the final say on rules questions.
The public statements of the D&D team, or anyone else at Wizards of the Coast, are not official rulings; they are advice. The tweets of Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford), the game’s principal rules designer, are sometimes a preview of rulings that appear here."
Ignoring the off-topic rules debate about Magic Missile for a moment, and circling back to the relative merits and flaws of the Evoker itself, this thread reminded me of a conversation I had a while ago with someone who wanted to improve the Evoker:

I've read his Tweets on the matter. To which are you referring? Because none that I have seen said that.

Thank you, and yeah, we have veered off the path. I've started playing in more wide open spaces now, with larger terrain. In this environment sculpt spells would still be good, but not as powerful. If you're in a dungeon crawl or cave diving, sculpt I would imagine sculpt spells is super strong.

It’s also strong, even in open spaces, if the party is full of toe-to-toe melee types.
Sculpt spell and empowered evocation (assuming you get that high of level) are the primary reasons to play an evoker.
Potent cantrip is nice and something to do while concentrating on another spell. Empowered evocation however is mediocre at best, even with the whole magic missile argument.
Kinda sad that one spell causes that much contention for empowered evocation. If there were half a dozen more evocation spells that could benefit as strongly, empowered evocation may be worth it. But, spending all that time arguing one spell kinds points out how week it is overall.

B-but.. if you take hexblade 1 and fighter 2 and center your entire build around it and use both of your biggest spell slots in a horribly wasteful way at level 20 you can do slightly more damage than the party fighter on a single target!
Seriously. If you're using your 9th level slot on magic missile, you're wizarding wrong. Wish. True Polymorph. Use good spells! xD
