I love the way cantrips work in 5e, since it allows for so much creativity.
Please discuss your favorite wizard attack cantrips and creative ways you might use them. Also please give a short background on how your wizard would have learned or chosen those cantrips.
Ok, here is my shot.
My favorite wizard attack cantrips include the feature which keeps many creatures from regenerating. Fire Bolt and Chill Touch both do this from long range, however, I guess that throwing a fire bolt might attract a lot of attention, and that could be bad for a squishy wizard. Firebolt also sets fire to things, which might be bad if you lived in a forest during the dry season. On the other hand, it seems to me like you could use Chill Touch from an unseen position without drawing attention to yourself.
For all these reasons, Gerbo Ningle, the Forest Gnome, learned Chill Touch when he was still a wizards apprentice, and was tasked with keeping the village clear from nasty vermin. Although Chill Touch is necromatic, and Gerbo comes from a village of Good aligned Forest Gnomes, there is still a respect for the study of necromatic magic, although it is considered impolite dinner conversation. When it comes to fighting, nobody ever sees Gerbo, since he looks just like a bush, or a rock, or a blank section of wall (per Minor Illusion), and the focus of his attach is far away from him.
I fell in love with Chill Touch, before I discovered Frostbite, which might be even better for Gerbo, but it seems like a mistake to get more than one attack cantrip. Please share your constructive thoughts on wizard cantrips!
I think that having multiple attack cantrips that do different types of damage is the way to go. That way when you run into something that's immune to your primary "go-to" damaging cantrip you have something to fall back on.
I wish classes had more Cantrips, as I love them and trying to get a mix of utilities and combat is harder then I would like with the limit to the count.
