He's a runt in size and strength, unable to pull his weight in the tribe. He's looked down upon by his peers and the women give him the cold shoulder. On the other hand he's the most compassionate, level headed, and fiercely intelligent of all of them.
So, after a few years of being scoffed at on a daily basis he's decided to head out into the world to see if he can't turn his wits into another form of strength to contribute to the tribe. He's already self-schooled from an old spellbook the tribe possessed (left behind by a dead mage perhaps), but i don't know which school would make most sense to study.
Divination, possibly, with an angle of god-talking?
Necromancy and conjuration are out; his tribe would not be amused at him summoning things to do the work for them.
Evocation is a fairly obvious one but I think I'd rather go for something with more utility... abjuration? Protecting the tribe through magic from forces they can't fight with physical prowess?
It depends on what your character's role in the tribe and the party is. If the character is all about damage, Evocation or War Magic are excellent options. If they're support focused, consider Transmutation or Divination.

War magic would be interesting, from the standpoint that the war wizard fights on the front lines. He might be a runt in his tribe, but with that skill he'd be right up there with them, empowering allies with his spells and raining missery and fire on his foes.
Gotta say, i love the idea of a Goliath Wizard like this. Good show!

War wizard might be the most obvious, because of your relatively small size you could not be a fighter so you chose another path. A path that few take because it is an admission of their perceived "weakness" You would keep some martial prowess but still have potent spells. I mean that one jives really well to me. If you want something more strongly against type then divination would be my choice.

You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
I suppose fighter/eldritch knight might work, but I'd prefer keeping to full caster. Transmutation seems to fit well. Once his adventuring life is over and he returns to the tribe he can transform himself into more powerful forms etc to contribute to daily life.

Yes it is a subclass added in Xanathar's Guide to Everything.

But, if you wanted to play the a "chip on his shoulder, bullied smart guy" you could go illusion. Come back with the goal to both help and embarrass your clan depending on who they were. I've always found illusion to be the best "smart guy" school since it allows you to outsmart your foes and laugh at them.

As the thread title asks.

Glad for ideas if you have any.

Transmutation is a good idea, hadn't thought of that. Cheers.

War wizard? Is that a non-PHB subclass?
