I have seen this kind of thread and many other of the class forums but not here so let’s get one going. Post a reply with a link to your wizard characters and tell us a bit about them and what it’s like to play them.
He's really fun to play, since he's a sort of disgruntled ex-gladiator, who also has a nerdy obsession with books, and I just find it really enjoyable to play. since he has such high strength and hp, sometimes I'll just randomly rush into melee and wack things with my Spider Staff just for fun. i play him in an extensive dungeon crawl campaign alongside a Water Genasi Cleric, Fire Genasi Artificer and a Variant Human Fighter, and he's just real fun. Made me really appreciate Transmutation wizards as well.
I've been playing a Deep Gnome Enchantment wizard named Dr. Grabigari in a Curse of Strahd game. It's been fun. I've built him as a mostly support character, so I usually end up pumping the tanks with Enlarge/Reduce or Dragon's Breath in combat, or dropping Slow on enemies. I've also gotten a lot of mileage out of using Charm Person to get information out of villagers. Also, he's just a fun little (neutral evil) jerk who has a lot of banter with the paladin and the fighter.

A Mammoth as your pet ??? Are you kidding me ?? You are so OP.... huh
One of my wizard was spun on the fly; when my dwarf barbarian decided it would be a good idea to take a joyride in Acereak's machine...
He was a custodian in a wizards academy; as a Bladesinger, he knew his way around a broomstick (a quarterstaff), and had dreams of adventure outside his place of work...well, he got his wish when a thunderstruck dwarf woman came tumbling into his library stacks from (apparently) another dimension.
While she was stunned, he explored the tear in reality she came through...and became my temporary character for a bit...let me tell you; a Bladesinger Wizard is a lot of fun...granted, I had a higher level to enjoy it...but upon being tormented by a ghostly jester and suffering Acereak's bizarre dungeon, my Bladesinger Wizard decided to return to his world...and my dwarf barbarian was allowed to come back.
I might bring the half elf wizard back in future campaigns; but from a proper starting point.
The Dirge Singer. You grew up amongst carnival folk, using what little talent you had to try and entertain those that came to see the show. Sadly your abilities were severely lacking. Your parents, desperate to keep the family business going, reached out to a Hag who bestowed upon you a "blessing". You picked up a flute and played the most hauntingly beautiful tune your parents had heard and they were happy. Over time you developed other gifts: the ability to conjure darkness and your touch became a conduit for death. Your parents sent you away and you found yourself back at the Hags hut and your real work began. Despite being taught by a Hag you are amazingly upbeat, a thing which causes the Hag no end of aggravation. Under the Hags tutelage you learned to speak with and pull spirits from an area where the Shadowfell overlapped the Feywild and use them to animate corpses and perform all manner of magical arts. Eventually your relentlessly happy personality caused the Hag to send you away in the hopes your activity would bring some strife or woe to the world. You make your way as an itinerant Gravedigger / Funeral organizer, using Create Bonfire for pyres/cremations and Mold Earth as sometimes a shovel is just too much work. Sometimes you try to help lost souls and unquiet spirits find rest or bring some closure to their families by holding seances, at other times you teach people of the worlds between worlds, the afterlifes and spend time communing with the spirits and souls beyond the material world. Music is still part of your life and your bone flute goes with you ever where and it forms part of your rituals and seances.

Theres a few homebrew (ish) elements like having Spirit Guardians as an Arcane spell and a Zombie cat familiar. It also makes use of a couple of feats from the latest UA.

I've been playing a forest gnome wizard named Zinliana Tumblespring. She had a scary childhood experience while lost in the deep woods ... she passed out after being attacked by a giant hornet. When she awoke, she found the hornet in a magical slumber and a trail of pink dust leading her back home. She thinks she was healed by pixies. She then became obsessed with tiny fey and spent many years researching fey creatures, fey magic, and fey crossings (background: sage-researcher). A wood elf abjuration/evocation wizard took interest in the little gnome (she's only 2'5" and 25 lbs) and trained her how to manipulate magical energy, protect the weak, and banish evil influences. He taught her Elvish and gave her a beautiful book of Elven lore. Zinliana (now a level 4 wizard) specializes in abjuration spells to protect herself and her companions. She also likes enchantment and illusion spells. She speaks Gnomish, Elvish, and Sylvan. One day she'd like to enter the Feywild to thank the pixies who she think saved her life. Zinliana is a super smart (Intelligence=20) bookworm who prefers small animals to humanoids. She values personal organization and logical thinking. The only weapon she carries is a double-edged, drop-point, silver dagger. She is terrified of stinging/biting insects and carries a small packet of pink dust (from her childhood experience) with her everywhere. Her spellbook is inlaid with small gems the color of pixie dust. Love her!!
So I had been tinkering with the idea of making a "cowboy" character...sort of a parody of Sam Elliott from "The Big Lebowski", "Ghost Rider" or "His Dark Materials"...just a laid-back dude with a low drawl.
Originally, I was aiming for a "Gunslinger" with Matt Mercer's "Fighter" subclass...but then I got to thinking:
What would a cowboy DO in a fantasy landscape?
Certainly, they could be a lawman or a bounty hunter ("City Watch" or "Urban Bounty Hunter")...but then I thought...maybe they're basically messengers.
I mean, you'd have to be nuts to frequently traverse a landscape filled with thieves, goblins, kobolds, and other monstrosities...even a jaunt between cities is fraught with peril...so it made sense that you'd have this dedicated guild of couriers who are tasked with delivery of important goods or messages.
And then I thought...what class would make the best courier?
It became a toss up between Druid, Rogue, & Wizard...and then it clearly became the Wizard.
Spells like "Secret Chest" and anti-divination spells means that packages are protected from scrying & robbery..."Sending" is a spell that can allow a courier to send an emergency message over a long-distance...and the ritual spell "Phantom Speed" is totally the sort of fast-travel, cowboy-styled spell this kind of character would have.
Then I took it further...the "Mark of Passage" Human subrace grants the PERFECT benefits for a courier, emphasizing mobility & guaranteeing spells that provide safe passage.
...then, I select the "Conjuration" subclass...which allows you to specialize in teleportation magic...and "Minor Conjuration" grants those random tools a frontiersmen might need to survive in the wild.
With the "Guild Artisan" background, you become part of an organization that centers around a network of courier & messengers...and for a small fee, they pay for your room & board, and legal expenses, etc...
I've even given a name for his guild...the Silver Dragon Courier Service : )
The character that revealed himself to me one night was Selby, a variant Human of the Order of Scribes. Much like his creator, he is fat, lazy and would rather be with his books than out in the elements but with the right people, he can be a very powerful ally.
My favourite class is wizard, so I have had quite a few. My current one is a human diviner called Aragentis 'Jasper' Thalm. He upsets all the edgelords I play with.
He was born in a major city to a lawyer and an apothecary, at the age of 8 he demonstrated enough talent in his studies to earn a partial scholarship to the wizard school in the area. He had a good number of friends and graduated in the top 10 of his class at 21. His parents are alive and very proud of him, he even has some romantic prospects. He carries around a carved wooden tube and a red silk cloth, inside the tube is a selection of carved dragon scales from numerous species carved with symbols, he tosses them and reads them to recieve his portents. He has an expressive and outgoing personality that never fails to make friends, and always has a smile.
Meanwhile, the DM is trying to restrain his chuckling as me and my friend paladin are the only non-edgelords in the campaign. Honestly, eight players, and five are playing scourge aasimar, and three of those are hexblades.
Currently playing a Tortle Wizard named Nortlin Wanthwe, which means tanky flashy boi. :) The character sheet isn't complete as I decided to move over to Foundry and use the character sheet supplied there instead. He also knows Aid and Call Lightning from a spellbook he picked up.
A Warforged Wizard, who had their name stripped (through memory modification) and themselves exiled from their previous life as a bartender for an offense against a high-powered adventurer passing through town (they didn't actually commit the offense, but said adventurer didn't care). On their travels, they found a lost spellbook in the desert, followed by the wizard who'd lost it, near-starved to death. They saved her life, and in return she taught them the ways of magic. Now, with their trusty Bat familiar Wingrat by their side, they search for a new name, and a new purpose.
Going to be either Conjuration or Transmutation when we hit level 2, though the decision is yet to come.
I'm starting in a Mines of Phandelver campaign with a level 2 Transmutation Wizard, soon. I will join an already existing group that started of with a oneshot and are about to begin the Mines of Phandelver.
TLDR; A masterful alchemist from Tethyr, with bad luck stuck in Phandalin ist trying to seek his luck as an adventurer.
Ruven Steinmahr , the most talented AND only heir to the Steinmahr family legacy. A family full of talented alchemists and transmuter....until I showed up in the family tree. I was born and raised in Tethyr and maybe the misfortune that haunts me depends in part on the superstition of the peasents in Tethyr that the number 5 brings mischief. My father didn’t care about these superstitions and still put me in the ranks of the Ruven Steinmahrs,as the fifth. And so we learned the hard way that superstitions prevail over education and had to leave our home with horrific debts. Anyway, my father had put money back in Neverwinter for bad times, with which we wanted to buy into the "Traubreu & Partner" trading company as excellent alchemists. Unfortunately, there never was a meeting because my father's age struck in Phandalin and we had to settle there for the time being. We opened "Steinmahr & Son" but my father died soon after the opening and now i'm stuck since 6 years in Phandalin with my store "& Son alchemists supplies". The only thing that remains as a proof, that i'm a great alchimist is a vial made of the finest crystal glass, decorated with the finest silver veins from the best goldsmiths in Tethyr. Just the sight of the vial is worth a title of nobility. But what is really valuable is the content. A masterful potion of indescribable beauty and power. A golden liquid that rests in the glass and pulsates slowly and rhythmically, as if an inner force was trying to escape. What does the potion do? I have no idea! As is always the case with new alchemical creations, I find it difficult to find volunteer testers. With this creation I will one day prove that I am the greatest alchemist of all time, if only I could escape this cursed city! Because business is not bad, it is miserable. And so I'm just waiting for an opportunity to leave my past behind and seek my luck as an adventurer.
An backstory idea I've had for a while but will likely never have a chance to play so if you like it feel free to use it:
Glucklich Beshaba Charlamain the Cartomancer (Lightfoot Halfling Divination wizard....the most annoying sort of halfling wizard, Urchin background)
Glucklich Beshaba Charmalaine was raised on the streets by loving parents who fell on hard times and lost their house, their business (a bakers) and nearly all their worldly possessions when a war spread through the area. Times were hard and, as Halflings, they became easy prey for the thugs, gangs and other ne'er do wells in town. In due course both parents met unfortunate ends, leaving Glucklich alone. That is until one day he woke up to find a small ferret had curled up next to him during the night for warmth. The two became inseparable and soon became a bit of a nuisance as petty thieves but they always managed to escape the town watch. Fortune smiled one day when Glucklich tried to pick the bags of a lady in the merchant square but was caught red handed, but rather than turn him over to the watch she offered Glucklich a job, as her full time apprentice, and thus began Glucklichs career as a Wizard. Divination magics seemed to come naturally which his mentor put down to his name which translated in various tongues to mean "Lucky", although further research also revealed Beshaba to be the name of a Human Goddess of Misfortune and Charmalaine to be the name of a Halfling God of Trickery. The Ferret (called Xaphan after the familair of Charmalaine God of Trickery) is now his familiar. Glucklich spell book is actually a series of cards similar to a tarot or tarokka deck (or the deck of illusions/many things), each spell is represent by 2 or more cards which when laid out in a formation help him to memorise/prepare his spells, as he learns a new spell he adds new cards to the deck.
When casting spells a ehtereal playing card appears in his hand with a dipiction of the spell on it which fullfills the somatic component of any spell he knows (like a magician making a card seemingly appear from nowhere with a click of his fingers, this bit is somewhat inspired by Gambit from the X Men). Feat Wise at level 4...Lucky...becuase we need to make it more anoying....
Here is the wizard I am currently running through Curse of Strahd.
Tyus is an evocation wizard from the city of Silverymoon and a member of the Magistrati (The Church of Azuth). He found himself in Daggerford after delivering a bag of holding full of historical texts, uncovered in a church lead Netheril expedition to Candlekeep. What he though was a quick side quest to earn some cash on is way home has turned into something much more deadly.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
