Yup, we recognise that the homebrew system needs to be rebuilt with the goal of being user friendly.
The current forms you use were created when the site was first built, to allow staff to enter official content - they're very much "bare bones" and only have the basics that were really needed. Due to community request, we revised the forms and added some systems around them to allow homebrew, but ... you're right, they need work, or ideally, replacing with a better system.
We do plan to do that, but there are a lot of other features we're planning too that are much larger impact, so I don't have any ideas on timing for this being done.
In the interim, the thing you want to do to add an ability score to your species is to:
1.) Create a new racial trait, called "Ability Score Increase" 2.) Create a new Modifier within that trait. 3.) In the "Edit Modifier" menu, set 'Modifier Type' to "Bonus". If you're using Tasha's Cauldron rules, you set Modifier Subtype to 'Choose an Ability Score'. If you're using Old PHB rules, you pick a specific ability score, such as 'Charisma Score' 4.) Ignore Ability Score, Die Count, and Dice Type, and instead put the number of points the ASI grants you in the "Fixed Value" category, usually 2 for a +2 bonus. 5.) Hit "Save Changes" in the lower right. 6.) Repeat steps 2 through 5 within the same "Ability Score Increase" racial trait to add a second ability boost, such as a +1.
NOTE: Homebrew species currently cannot enforce the usual Tasha's Cauldron rule of "Increase one score by 2 and a different score by 1." We don't have the ability to force someone to pick two different scores. You may want to put a Creator's Note in your Ability Score Increase trait reminding people to play honestly. Or not, if you don't care to or are using Old PHB rules instead of TCoE rules.
And in the meantime, the easiest way to learn how to do stuff in there is to find something official that does the same thing and use it as a template just to dissect it. You can delete it afterwords. And if you can’t figure something out post about it in the Homebrew forum and someone will help you.
You can set up the optional Ability Scores from Tasha's. When adding the racial trait Ability Score Modifier set it to granted, but don't add the modifier. Instead, add an 'option'. You can then make two options, the +2/+1 or the +1/+1/+1, that the player can pick from in character creation.
