So, I've been a DM for my group since early last year, but I've really dove into it headfirst. This site has been very helpful in keeping me organized and helping me flesh out NPCs for the homebrew world my players play in. The only thing I really have to complain about is the lack of a folder option in character creation. I have upwards of 60 NPCs now, and it's a little overwhelming at the point. I surely can't be alone in thinking it would be a wonderful QoL improvement, right? Even if it was just for subscribers.
I don't know how you do the rest of your campaign management but i use Notion (free) to track my campaign, make notes and the likes. In it i can create tables and databases and i just create NPC's in there and put a link to DNDBeyond in it. That way i can write out a story, @NPC's in that story and have a link on the fly for that NPC to DNDBeyond.
Otherwise maybe name the NPC's like LocationName_NPCName so you can search for all NPC's in one location?
One thing I do as a workaround is to make a second Campaign for each active campaign I’m DMing, just for the NPCs I build as PCs, and to use in the Encounter Builder to make an encounter for testing my monsters to make sure the rollable are working correctly. Whenever I need an NPC for a “Campaign X,” I go to the “Campaign X (NPCs)” campaign. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing.
I remember posting on twitter asking for this and the dndbeyond twitter replied with something along the lines that it was a great idea (or something like that - they responded positively). That was months back though :\

Been asking for this for over a year now. I'm sure it's on their radar, but low priority.
