I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a free content user but when trying to pick a subclass for a new character I get vary few options for example when playing a wizard I’m unable to choose anything but the evocation subclass I also am unable to choose from feats I only get to choose grappler if this is happening because I need to buy something I believe that should be more clearly stated somewhere
If you click on the new player guide link it states the following:
D&D Beyond is an official toolset that makes playing Dungeons & Dragons easy for beginners. You can access the basic rules of the game for free, create a character in minutes and play them using digital dice from your browser or mobile device, and manage your campaign! You can even purchase official D&D books in the marketplace to level up your game experience.
That is exactly why you cannot select other options in the character builder. What do you mean clearly stated somewhere?
If you go through any of the Game Rules for classes, races, monsters, feats, backgrounds, or magic items and you try and read up on anything that is not in the Basic Rules or Elemental Evil's Player Companion, you won't be able to even view it.
If you go into any source or adventure book in the store it clearly states something similar to:
This purchase unlocks the contents of this source for use with D&D Beyond, including the book in digital format in the game compendium and access options from the book in the searchable listings, character builder, and digital sheet.
If you scroll down each source and see the different section bundles it says stuff like (from the PHB page)
Get the 10 backgrounds from Player's Handbook for use on D&D Beyond. You may also purchase individual backgrounds.
Get the 28 subclasses from Player's Handbook for use on D&D Beyond. You may also purchase individual subclasses.
Get the 41 feats from Player's Handbook for use on D&D Beyond. You may also purchase individual feats.
Get the 57 spells from Player's Handbook for use on D&D Beyond. You may also purchase individual spells.
