I personally think that you should be able scan a QR code that is one time use in the back of a book, and have that book on dnd beyond. I just bought a ton of physical books that cost a lot and its annoying that I have to buy them again.
You'd have to seal each and every book and stores would have to keep all books sealed otherwise there isn't anything stopping someone from just going to a store, opening a book and scanning the code.
Just like in videogames, boardgames, music, movies, and other books, the norm is that each medium and/or platform is its own separate product, and if you want to access content on a different medium or platform, you will need to pay for it. Each medium and platform have their own bills to pay and workers to feed. If people want free tools and options, you can make your own digital character sheet Google Sheets, and there is an ocean of free homebrew stuff out there on the internet.
