Picking forest gnome and choosing the school of illusion adds two instances of minor illusion to your spellbook rather then identifying you allready know the spell and let you pick a diffrent cantrip. So to get that extra cantrip you gotta homebrew a feat and add it to your character.
Its a known issue. Your workaround works well, as does creating a magic item that grants the cantrip and does not require attunement. They are currently working on “rules exceptions” (like the Disciple of Life feature of the Life Cleric), so there is some hope that it may be addressed relatively soon.....but there are no guarantees. Since it is not that hard to work around, it probably has a lower priority than things that are not so easily worked around by users. Although that’s just my guess, I have no insider knowledge about such things.
The main downside is that to use homebrew, you need a sub. Its not a big issue, i mean, 3$/month.
That beeing said, it might scare off newer players, dunno. But yeh its pretty easy to work around - All though my OCD brain hates the doubble minor illusion in my spellbook so i homebrewed the race (copypasted really) and just removed it as a racial, usinge school of illusion version and the feat for the extra cantrip :)

you dont need a sub to create homebrew, only to add public homebrew to your collection
I think we are talking past each other. You can't use someone else's public homebrew without a sub, but you can homebrew a feat or a magic item to do what is needed for the workaround without a sub. So a sub is not needed to work around the forest gnome/school of illusion limitation. Furthermore, if someone in a campaign homebrews the needed feat or item, anyone in that campaign can use the homebrew, with or without a sub, as homebrew collections are automatically shared in campaigns. Now, published homebrew in your collection might not be sharable if the others don't have a sub--there at least used to be issues with that--but private homebrew is shared regardless of sub status.
Or am I missing your point altogether? If so, can you try explaining it again, as I'm clearly not understanding.
Well yes, which is kind of the point. Cant use it without a sub.
You can totally create your own version without a Sub, and you can totally use your own version without a Sub. It is always free to create and use your own homebrews here.
In addition, if you are in a DDB campaign with others, they can use your homebrews without a Sub, and you can also use theirs without a Sub. It is always free to access the Homebrew collections of those with whom you are in a campaign and vice versa.
So you can create your own feat to grant your character the Cantrip they should otherwise be able to take, and add that feat to your character all without any need for a Subscription whatsoever.

Since you already homebrewed your own version of the race, why didn’t you just change it so that the racial trait that normally grants that spell instead grants a choice of Wizard Cantrip instead, and then skip the feat altogether?
