I am trying to make a homebrew item and am running into a bit of a snag. I am trying to attach the spells Armor of Agathys and Hunger of Hadar to the item through the "Add a Spell" feature.
I have already stated both spells with code blocks in the items description, but I want to add spell level and charges on the item for the player to keep track of their used spells.
Is there a reason I cannot use these spells on the item? I have all content shared with me on DnD Beyond and have made dozens of homebrew items and monsters, and this is the first instance where I have encountered this problem.
Having content shared with you is insufficient for the purpose of allowing you to use it in Homebrew creation. Those spells are not free access, so in order to attach them to any Homebrew you must either purchase them or the PHB from this website.
Okay. I thought that I was able to use anything shared with me in the homebrew creation, but now I know that is not the case. Are the "free access" spells the same as the ones included in the basic rules? Thank you!!
What you have to understand is that content is not shared “with you,” but instead shared with the campaign specifically. As such it is usable within the campaign but not useable outside of that campaign (which includes the homebrewer).

They are the ones in the combined Basic Rules & SRD (called simply “basic rules” here) as well as the ones from the Elemental Evil Player’s Companion:
