Recently I've been working on creating a set of Merfolk races under the base race 'Merfolk' with about 3 subraces and 1 Variant race. After creating the base race, i made the Variant Race called Triton. I looked for Merfolk under 'Race Groups' but it was nowhere to be found. I made a Subrace after, and found that the 'Triton' Variant race had its own Race group, yet Merfolk still didn't. Is there a way to fix this?

You didn’t find any references to a “merfolk” race group because there is no official Merfolk PC Race. You also didn’t find your Triton variant race as a race group, you found the official Triton PC race: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/triton). You might have an easier time remaking you Triton a variant of that official Triton instead. You could also make your Merfolk as a variant of the Triton as well. Alternatively, you could instead make your Merfolk as a Variant of the Human race and use that race group.
