I made a homebrew race called Vryloka a long time ago, and today I updated them to work more like the MoTM races, which meant deleting the subraces, and making them two races.
All of my characters who used that race cannot open in the character builder or character sheet.

I really don't want to have to remake these characters, which have notes, custom items, etc, on them.
I'm guessing my only hope is someone at DDB who can like, access the characters and set race to elf or whatever so I can get into them and set their race to what it should be.
The new version of the race works fine on a new character, btw. No issues.
Go to Your homebrew creations and in the “status” section you can activate the toggle to view your deleted homebrews as shown in the following image:
Then you will be able to recover your deleted homebrews which should solve your issue and allow you to change their races.
Thank you for the suggestion. If it showed me deleted subraces, I'd be all sorted. I guess I should always do major revisions as a new version and only delete the obsolete one when I'm sure everything works with the new one. Seems...a bit extra, though.
Welp. They, internally, have no way to recover the character.
That seems....poorly designed, to me. It's hard to believe that there is no version history, or ability for someone with full access to get into the data for the character and change something without actually loading said character.
Right, but is there a way to recover the subraces? If you could recover those and fix your race that should in-break the characters. I only ask because I can see deleted subraces in my deleted creations, so it’s truly baffling me that you can’t recover them. See:
I think the problem was that these were subraces of a homebrew race, which means they are bundled with the homebrew race, not as separate creations.
Since the homebrew system wasn't designed with the customer in mind (it's the same system the staff uses to create official things, just with some functionality locked away from non-staff), there are still some ways of accidentally screwing things up badly. They've taken care of some of those over time, but this particular problem of deleting a homebrew subrace of a homebrew race isn't as common.

What's wild to me is the idea that they don't have an internal method of recovering previous versions of something they've edited. That is truly strange.
naruhoodie is often right about such things, but in this case I have already posted evidence to the contrary. Both the “Test” subrace in that image was a subrace of my homebrewed “Trait Testing Race,” and the Brightnose Hobgoblin was a subrace of a homebrewed copy of the original Hobgoblin since the OG Hobgoblin can’t have subraces. 🤷♂️

doesn't recover deleted subraces, apperently.

I’m surprised your deleted subraces aren’t shown, mine shows me my deleted subraces. Try checking again.
Yes, you should always swap PCs over to the new versions of stuff before deleting the old versions. Especially for active characters.

Shows only the first full race version I made that was just a renamed dragonborn, to test out the system.

Did you delete the subraces or change them? If you changed them, did you leave them designated as subraces but uncheck the “WillHave Subraces” box?

I deleted them and then unchecked the subraces box.

Strange that they don’t show up under your deleted homebrews then.

YEah. I put in a help ticket. Hopefully someone can fix it so my wife doesn't have to rebuild her character from scratch.

Yeah. At least my wife isn't too put out about having to remake the character.

That’s good. Can the support staff explain why your subraces are unrecoverable? If they could recover those then you could get the characters back.

Their reply was very short, tbh. They just said there was no way to recover a character when they get broken by deleting their subrace.

I think the poster below is right, unfortunately.
