My bother and his adult daughter (my niece) are both players in my current campaign, they each have their own character, and they live far away so they join the rest of us (my two nephews, my son, and me) remotely when we play, approximately once every 2-3 weeks. Often, my niece has to work on the weekends we play, so my brother will play her character as well as his. And in the near future my brother is going on a trip, so it may be the other way - that my niece has to play both characters during a session while he's gone. They have uploaded their characters to my campaign and have started tracking them on-the-fly (hit points, spell slots, equipment, etc.) during our sessions.
So, to my question ... Is there a way for both of them (with different user names on D&D Beyond) to edit each other's characters on D&D Beyond, within my campaign? I know that I can edit both of their characters, but it looks like they cannot edit each other's. I have not yet paid for a subscription to D&D Beyond - if I do that, will they then be able to edit each other's characters?
The only way for multiple people to edit a character on different accounts is if one of them is the owner of the character, and the other is the DM of the campaign (or if either of them works at Dndbeyond). So unfortunately no.
There is one way, whoever is going to be absent needs to “unassign” the character so the the other person can “claim” it. Essentially transferring ownership of the character. That can be done back and forth as often as necessary. That’s the only way.
If neither of them are going to be playing the character at the same time, you can have whoever has the character unassign it from themselves in the campaign, and then the other person can claim it. If they're worried about something getting messed up accidentally, they can either export a copy as a PDF before unassigning it (they could also create a duplicate and unassign that, but that can be more complicated in resolving any differences between the sheets and requires them to have enough character slots).

Thank you all for your help and suggestions! We will try the unassign/claim idea.
How do I unassign a character?
Under My Campaigns, open the particular campaign in which you wish to unassign your character and you can do it there:
You can also do it from My Characters as well.
