I created a custom race with two sub-races and published them for the community. I created a new version of the parent race and it is no longer linked to the sub-races of version 1. There is no mechanism to re-link to an existing sub-race, implying that I will need to duplicate the sub-races for the new parent race version.
Scanning the forums I see that this has been a known and reported bug since at least 2017. When will this be addressed?
Custom classes are not available on DDB, do you mean races and subraces? If so then what you are experiencing is unfortunately how it works. That’s part of the reason it is always best to wait until your homebrews are completely finished including all playtesting and editing prior to publishing.
Your only recourse now is to create yet another new version of the race, recreate the subraces from scratch attached to that newest version and re-save everything. I highly recommend you do not publish that newest version until all playtesting and editing has been completed and you are 1,000% sure it is complete and will need no further updates.
As IamSposta says this is unfortunately just how sub-races work, and it's something that really needs to be fixed but shows no sign of ever being resolved (maybe when OneD&D hits?). Even if you playtest extensively you may still find a bug or exploit you missed, or new content might come out that you'd like to update your race to be compatible with (e.g- newer races having no fixed ability score increases anymore), new standard language for a feature you've used etc.
This is part of why I stopped using homebrew sub-races, and instead try to build them as options on the parent race; it means you have to re-release the whole thing even if you only changed one of the "sub-races" but I find it so much easier to work with (and it doesn't create impossible to remove sub-race copies). I have a guide on how I do this, if you'd like to try it this way, because it may save you time in future if you think you might ever need to update the parent race again.

Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.

I did mean race; I was sleepy posting, apparently. I have corrected the thread accordingly.
