Could really use this functionality. My DM allowed me to use MCDM's Strongholds and Followers ruleset, which allows me to study spells at my Warlock Tower. I learned Clone, but I can't add it to my spell list.
You might be able to create a Feat that allows you to gain that spell. You could name it like "Warlock Tower Spells" or something.

I had to make a feat and I had to make a copy of clone that was a level 5 spell instead of 8.
This so far has been the single biggest pain both as a player and as a DM. Extra spells add a ton of flavor and make a fantastic reward for players. It’s disappointing that there seems to be no straightforward/simple way to make them work.
I've spent the last 2 hours fighting with this very thing. Adding a spell to a player should be an incredibly simple task for the DM. So far its really souring me on using D&D Beyond to run my first campaign. They're not even homebrew spells...

Mega agreed. If D&D Beyond is being advertised as an easy to use D&D service, it needs to behave in a way that is, in fact, easy to use.
They still haven't fixed this simple thing? All these glaring simple things that should be fixed are only going to be amplified with so many people trying to switch to online.
Ran into this issue myself when trying to give my sorcerer player Zephyr Strike as a reward. Ended up using a homebrew feat, but now the spells show as "at will" and can't be cast using the tracked spell slots.
Also happy birthday to this thread, it's a year old!
A wizard can learn an extra cantrip if they found the spell scroll and copied it to their spellbook, correct? I would assume this is the most common reason for extra cantrips
I have a College of Whispers bard with Mind Sliver in my game. I really want a DM Toggle on the campaign page so that I can let my players pick off-class spells and feats without having to homebrew an entire Subclass. The 4th Edition Character Builder let you do what you want and if you picked outside official rules there was a big banner that said "Not Valid For Adventurer's League Play" on the top of the character sheet. @BadEye can we please add this to the goals down the road?
Cantrips aren't written in a spellbook, you simply learn more as you progress through your class. I don't know of any way to learn extra cantrips without taking the Magic Initiate feat or by DM fiat Description of Cantrips: A cantrip is a spell that can be cast at will, without using a spell slot and without being prepared in advance. Repeated practice has fixed the spell in the caster's mind and infused the caster with the magic needed to produce the effect over and over. A cantrip's spell level is 0. source: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/spellcasting#Cantrips - (PHB page 201, for physical reference)

You don't have to homebrew the entire subclass, just the spell in question: copy it, put something in the name so you (and the players) know its a special case, and add the relevant caster class to the "availalbe to classes" box.
I agree, an easier way to "break the rules" for such things would be helpful.
In terms of feats, I believe you can turn off the pre-requisite requirements.

I know this thread is basically dead but a better workaround is to create a homebrew version of the spell, and change the classes it's available to, removing all the others then adding warlock. This will allow you to select it as your Mystic Arcanum. Once it's learned by the character, you can remove the spell from your collection so it doesn't appear for your other warlocks. It will still remain on the warlock that it's already on, however.
Maybe I'm blind but where can I find this "new spell list" feature?
I know I can homebrew existing spells and add additional classes to them but it's still not very user friendly. Especially if you want to award just one player with a new spell that consumes spell slots.
So you can now technically add a spell that will use spell slots and it will up-cast by adding a feat. BUT you HAVE to use the "Gift of the Metallic Dragon (Charisma, Intelligence, Wisdom)" feat from Fizban Treasury of Dragons source as a base when creating the homebrew feat (there is a hidden mechanic in the feat that is not enabled for other dndbeyond homebrew and its only enabled for the second down cure wounds spell) even when adding new spell they do not use spell slots its only that pre-existing one that can be edited and will use your characters spell slots)
Now for it to work you have to change the second down spell into a selection of spell level or an exact spell and nothing else(more testing is required to see other options but so far this is the only way as I'm writing this). But it is now possible for my warlock to learn Ex. Chromatic Orb and not count against its known spells but use the pact magic slots as he levels up. ^-^
D&D Beyond now that its been Officially in a licenses source. Please Please make this hidden mechanic visible for our other/future homebrew plz.
Thanks so much for this! I purchased the Gift of the Metallic Dragon feat as a single item, but it's not showing up as an template to base a homebrew off of - how did you manage that?
Hmm it should work i did buy the whole book and i can still find it by going to select create a feat and type "gift" and its there as of right now. There could be a small delay after purchasing material, give it a bit (My homebrew stuff updates roughly every 5-10 minutes for changes made).
Is there a way to do this without having to manually input every class feature? I want to add additional spells known to my shadow sorcerer, but it's very frustrating trying to input all of the subclass features when all I want to do is add a few additional spells known.

Create the subclass using Shadow Sorcerer as a template. Then you'll only need to add a feature for the spells, while all the other features are already there.

This issue may have just been resolved. I haven't tested it thoroughly yet.

Is this still possible? Homebrew spells are not showing up for me when I crate a homebrew feat.
