The text for room K18 in Chapter 4 of Curse of Strahd now reads as follows:
A recently constructed masonry wall blocks the staircase 10 feet below the landing west of area K17. A ***** in this wall allows gas (or a vampire in gaseous form) to pass from one side of the wall to the other. A character who inspects the wall closely can spot the ***** with a successful DC 10 Wisdom (Perception) check.
As written, the censorship renders the passage unusable - what is actually in the wall? Was it something really offensive?
Upon looking at my Curse of Strahd book, it appears that the censored word has the definition "a narrow opening or crack". The word was also used in the original I6 Ravenloft module. Unfortunately, the word has been used as a racial slur in some places (which is why I'm not repeating it here).
Instead of censoring the word outright, can't it just be replaced with a synonym? That removes any possibility of including a word that is offensive while still making sure players who are using the module understand how to run this room. Right now this looks like an unintended bug.
The word is not being censored when I read the relevant passage on DDB. Are you accessing the site on a school or work IP that might have an auto-censor, or have any application or addon yourself that might do the same?
Good question. I cleared caches and double checked on two devices connected to two internet networks, and it's censored for me on both devices and networks. On both devices, typing in "define *****" into Google supplies the relevant definition.
I'm going to see if there is a censorship setting in D&D Beyond I activated somehow, which could be an explanation.
Yep, that was it - my account has "view censored content" disabled, so I enabled it and I can read the word correctly. My guess is that this word was only recently added into the "censored words" list on D&D Beyond so I had never run into this as an issue before.
Thanks for digging into this and confirming it was just me (and other folks that have that setting disabled).

I didn't even know DDB had such a setting!

Yup. It comes disabled as the default to protect minors, but you can enable it under the Account page.
