I am trying to make a homebrew background for a homebrew campaign that i am in. I made a homebrewed feat for the background that would complement the background but it doesnt show that specific feat in the list of feats that you can choose from in the background. I'm confused since i know you cannot publish homebrew subclasses, feats and such that have homebrewed components in them but all my homebrew is private and for the use of my campaign only. I tried to google this issue but i couldn't find any ruling or person with this issue. Please help.
You can totally attach homebrewed feats to a homebrewed background, they just don’t fall in alphabetical order with the official feats. You gotta scroll all the way to the bottom of the list of official feats, and then your homebrewed feats will start being listed in their own alphabetical order.
I tried adding just the feat that i homebrewed but the feat just disappears from my background. Maybe it's a problem with the feat and not necessarily with the background?
Your feat has a prerequisite. Since the background would automatically grant the feat regardless of the character having met the prereq, those two things might be in conflict. Try it with a feat that doesn’t have a prereq.
Also, when you added the feat, did you enter a “name?”
I tried removing the prerequisite beforehand, it's the same issue. Also in the name section of the added feat I put the same name as the feat. I also tried to remake the feat, pass it as empty and to refresh the description section of my character (or to re-add the background in my character) to see if it was an update issue. If I put any of my feats and an official feat into the list it only shows the official 5e feat in the dropdown list, and it still makes me choose the feat, even if "technically" there's only one valid choice. I also checked it just now to see if publishing the feat might solve the problem and the issue persists.
I ran some tests and you’re right. We can certainly add homebrewed feats to a homebrewed background, but the background doesn’t actually add the feat to the character sheets. I dropped a line about it to someone, hopefully the devs will be able to fix it. 🤷♂️

What’s the feat?

Publishing never solves the problem, it just makes it worse because now you can never edit it or delete it.

I tried all that before publishing the feat. I can make another named version, no worries.
