Signed up for the heroic subscription ($3/month) which sounded like the best option if I just wanted to use it to create characters. It was a bit vague but I signed up assuming it would give me access to at least all the core content for making a character, skills, feats, etc....
However, after getting it when I make a character and I go to add a feat I only see 2 options: Grappler and Sniverblin Magic? Did I get the wrong subscription? Did I mistake what the subscription provided as far as content ?
I'm not an official representative of D&D Beyond, but the Hero Tier subscription pretty clearly states what it grants you:
Intended primarily for players, this tier removes ads, allows you to create an unlimited number of characters, and add publicly-shared homebrew content to your collection to use within the toolset.
Also, if you scroll down a bit on the subscriptions page, there's a big table of features that each tier grants you. Nowhere does it say it grants you access to locked content.
Ya, guess I mistook that for giving access to enough material to make a complete character at least. I've already bought the books, so I can't really justify paying again for each book just on dndbeyond. Be nice if they gave you some kind of discount on digital content if you bought the paper version.
You can just use the home brew function and add any parts not included in the free versions. If you like the functionality of DDB and want to support it, consider buying some of the specific features, even if not a full book. Remember, you’re not re-buying a book from WorC, you’re unlocking access to digital content from Curse, a licensor.
The buyers guide I wrote a while back spells out a variety of options for obtaining the content you need, including homebrewing, and purchasing individual items (subclasses, feats, etc). If you think it would be helpful, the link is in my signature.
This was definitely not clear. What is not still clear what does this get me that the free account does not? I'm only using this for one campaign. It does not seem to give me any advantage since I only need the characters for that one campaign, which already has the content I need.
By not clear I mean, there is of plethora of text on the website. I didn't see a clear indication of what was not included. I just had to guess what was included since I was never given the employee briefing explaining how everything worked.
A Hero Tier subscription provides the following benefits:
-Unlimited characters (a free account allows you to have up to 6)
-No ads
-You can add published homebrew to your collection and use it in characters you create.
If you are only in one campaign, don't mind the occasional ad, and don't plan to use published homebrew, you don't need a subscription. I used DDB quite happily without a subscription for quite some time. I eventually got a subscription because I wanted more character slots.
If you only have one character, all you need to purchase are the individual elements (Race, subclass, spells, magic items) you need for that character: some of those elements are free, so you may not need to purchase anything depending on your character. If you have the time and interest, you can also homebrew the elements you need and not pay anything.
When you talked about things not being clear, were you referring to the page about subscriptions in the marketplace, the Buyer's Guide I referred to above, or something else? If the Buyer's Guide, do you have suggestions about how I could make things clearer?
Well, I guess I'm not getting the subscription then. I had expected it to add more races at the bare minimum, but I guess not. Although I suppose I could use the homebrew feature to rectify that.
I have purchased (almost) all the books, have shared them and have a master subscription. Because of this my **players** don't have to pay a cent. Has saved my players a lot of coin.
They really should include more. Over the course of a year, they make $36 per person for the hero subscription. That adds up with as many people who use it.
You're telling me they cannot give a free race, class and feat for each step up the subscription ladder?
And I could have sworn 'Custom Character Sheets' were mentioned somewhere, but I have yet to see that after subscribing, though I could have read that on Roll20.
I just subscribed a few days ago. The extra characters don't make it worth it and I don't homebrew. I just wanted to create characters for the campaigns I play in. I could easily print them out, delete and stay at 6 or fewer. They gave me those new digital dice, but when I roll them there aren't any numbers! The other dice have numbers, so it's not a glitch on my end.
DnD Beyond needs to step up their subscription game. I would gladly pay $9.99 monthly if it unlocked all content.
Then a subscription is not for you. That is a good thing - saves you money! If you want to look at it a different way you can not subscribe and buy yourself a race, class or feat each month and still save money.
If you mean the healing dice, then mine have numbers and are working as intended. I don't love them, but they work. I would post a bug thread (or add to an existing one) and look at your browser.
Changing from a buy once and own forever to a subscription model now would annoy a lot of people. I have spent hundreds on owning content. To have that taken away and be forced to pay for access each month OR to have that an other people being allowed to just pay for access each month would not make me happy.
I don't understand why people are complaining that they don't have to have a subscription.

Subscriptions do not unlock any non-free content.

At that price its $120/year. You could just buy four whole books from DDB for that price and never need to pay again.
