A polite reminder to the administrative team here at dndbeyond, this issue is almost 3 years old now. I really don't want to remake all my subraces because of one small mistake on the parent race... Thank you for your consideration.
Bringing this up again. Even if someone didn't need to update the parent race, I haven't figured out how to add more subraces like I was planning to.
You cannot. Once it is published it is effectively locked in stone. This is yet another reason why it is always considered best practice to not publish until everything is perfect and completely finalized.
Thank you for confirming it is impossible. And I do understand the best practice of waiting until it is perfect.
My problem was that I was trying to use races to basically consolidate rules for playing a type of creature (construct). I ended up wanting a 3 tiered system that would let people pull rules from the previous tiers to end up with playable race at the end. It was intended to be flexible and allow people to make new 3rd tier subraces as they seam fit. The only way I see this playing out in current DnD beyond is to instead just use the create from copy workflow to generate a bunch of independent races. I might instead consolidate my second tier into my first tier so that (Construct -> Clockwork -> Owl) becomes (Construct, Clockwork -> Owl). Or, I might be able to compress the 2nd tier rules into options of the 1st tier. (it's just hard without having multi-tiered options)
It's just kinda silly that: The links that tie subraces to their parent race are un-editable after creation and that you can't have subraces of subraces. I know the devs are working on overhauling the homebrew system, I just don't understand how it got so clunky in the first place.
Well, not having subraces of Subraces is because nothing official works that way. You could possibly theoretically make a race with variants and subraces and get things to overlap that way. I personally wouldn’t get my hopes up that it’ll work, but you could certainly try. Can’t hurt after all. But you would have to do it all in one shot.
Also, don’t forget that you can give base races (and maybe variants) “Options” too. (Often goes haywire with subraces however.)
I'd like to bump this post and see if there is ANY progress on this issue from Devs...
I've been adding new races, with sub-races, over the last month and everyone has the following disclaimer: This Race cannot be shared with the community for the following reasons:
This homebrew Race has been set to have subraces, but no subraces have been created.
How is this still an issue over 3 years after the initial post of this thread? Please fix ASAP so that my race/subraces can properly nest under one another in character creation for my campaigns.

Once you have finished creating all of your subraces, go back to the main race homebrew and click on the Save Changes button. This is the only time that the homebrew checker runs, which should remove that message. Also, be advised that homebrew should only be published if it has been thoroughly tested, as it is impossible to un-publish homebrew, and that you and your players can use all of the homebrew you create (and keep in My Collection) without it being published.

The original post was regarding a different issue: That after publishing a homebrew race with subraces, creating a new version of the base race requires that all of the subraces be re-created before it can be published again.

This is unrelated to the homebrew checker messages you're seeing on your base races. Homebrew races and subraces cannot nest like the official ones, at least at the moment. You can use a standard naming convention (Race, Subrace) like some other users do to have the subraces at least be grouped relatively closely in the Character Builder.

This was exactly what I was needing. Of all of my attempts to remedy the "bug", I didn't think to go all the way to the parent race and click save. Thank you :).
Just reiterating this problem. I've created a race with 3 subraces and submitted it. I realized I missed an action type choice on the parent race and went to update it but now the updated version hasn't carried over any of the subrace information from the old. Not motivated enough to re-enter all 3 subraces just to fix a small issue but worth pointing out that this is still happening and really hampers homebrew race/subrace creation.
The trick is to not make them public until after you have done enough playtesting to spot and fix all of that stuff.
this isn't really a good option from a creator's pov, the best feedback a creator gets is from those using the race after it is published, not being able to take the feedback and utilize it in an easy way, when the issue is minute like making a mistake, or even if you want to update it and add more subraces you are faced with the wall of having to not only repair what you did wrong but also recreate every subrace under the parent. this issue has been stagnant for 3 years. If this is to be an official dnd website it is doing a terrible job at helping the creators of homebrew.
