You won't be able to search for other users' characters. However, you can create a campaign and have your characters added to the same campaign. To do so, you'll need to create the campaign and then give your friends the campaign invite link that is provided to you in the campaign page. They can use that link to add their characters to the same group.
DDB doesn't really do "friends" (or search terms or exclusion filters). We are hoping they have the features common to sites in 2005 by 2021.
Gripes aside: players have to be invited to campaigns with the invite link (shared via discord, PM, text, email, or third party IM) and chat can use discord or a third party service (my friends use google hangouts since before DDB added discord).

Sorry for this question but I'm 50 and new to the online venue of D and D....how do I add my friends to a group and to chat?
I'm not sure where to even search for them....as they have made characters but I cant find them...and yes we set are settings to public.
