Any reason why if I choose Paladin as my starting class and warlock after that I can’t take the shield spell but if I do it the other way I can take the shield spell?
AS long as you take hexblade as your patron you are fine either way. Looking at the Shield Spell the only option to get shield spell would be from a hexblade.
Ahh makes sense while I was going from a higher level to lower level it kept the shield spell in the slot even though there were only 1 level in warlock
Hmm, I was able to build one and select Shield. Just to check, are you 1) taking the Hexblade subclass, and 2) looking under the spells tab of Warlock rather than Paladin?

I can only guess you are trying to learn it from different classes. Neither class knows shield, only certain subclasses like hexblade.
