Basically what the title says: I created a campaign and added some characters to it (because we created them using my account and I thought it would be easier this way rather than recreating every character). My friends can join the campaign and claim a character but if they do so, they can neither view nor edit the character sheet of the character they claimed or view that of any other claimed character. Viewing the sheets of unclaimed characters works just fine and I can see and edit everything, but claimed characters can't be viewed / edited by any player - they always geht the E500 "Whoops! We rolled a 1 on our Retrieve Character check. We're heading into town to visit the blacksmith for repairs. Try again after a Short Rest.". They can, however, join the campaign with a character of their own and that works without any problem, so now I guess we will be recreating everything after all, but I was wondering whether this is a bug or we just missed some setting we need to change or something?
I know that the one we deleted was accidentally created as private and I'm not sure about the one linked above - it might have been private at one point but I know that it was set to public when I added it to the campaign. The unassigned ones, however, were definetly created as public, so this might actually be the reason why only their sheets can be viewed by everyone … Thanks ^^
We experimented a bit more with it and unfortunately it seems that characters that were created as (or at some point set to) private simply can't be viewed / edited and have to be recreated as public characters. Not sure if there'll be an official fix for this anytime soon?
Hello! My players and I are experiencing the same problem at this moment in time. It wouldn't be too much of an issue if I were the one who, as the GM, edited all of their sheets, but I enough to manage as it is. I would much prefer that they edit their own characters rather than use me as an intermediary every time there is something they need to correct/edit/update.
Will there be a fix for this issue in the near future? Thank you, kindly!

As the DM you can edit their sheets. Go into their sheets and set them to public. I believe that should fix it.
My character had been public. The DM toggled the character from public to private and back. I had to wait about 5 minutes and to refresh the page before I could edit the character.
Just as a note, the only thing that really seemed to work was recreating the character as Public from the start. For some reason, toggling it away from Private to Public didn't seem to help matters if it is was created as Private, first.
However, it seems that now you are able to toggle it with some success, though there's a bit of lag (which is understandable).
This is expected behavior. The URL generated by the 'share' button is for a non-editable/public version of the character sheet. The URL you get by going to 'My Characters' or the Campaign link and clicking on 'view' under the character in question is the controllable version. You'll see a lot of bug posts where someone tells the person reporting an issue to provide a link to their character and to use the URL, not the share link, for this reason. I'm not sure if that's related to your larger issue, though.

Thanks for the reply! It's a bit aggravating that this behavior exists, as it's extremely confusing to newer users. (I've only been using dndbeoynd in this fashion for a few games sessions).
I think it would be good to have a note or an autoredirect if you are logged in and have edit permissions to that character. That way, there's no confusion: you can either edit the character or you can't.
Hi, I'm also having this issue, where I get a black screen when I go to look at my character. When I go to look at other characters in my campaign, it's fine, and I can even see my character if I log out, but while logged in it just comes up as a black screen. It's been like this for a few days at least.
Happens in multiple browsers, with extensions disabled. I've noticed multiple other threads with this issue, most of them with no resolution or some people saying it eventually just fixed itself or happened on and off.

How are you trying to access the character sheet?
One option to try (although it is a bit of a pain) is to try clearing your browser cache.
BTW, thank you for looking through the forums for similar issues and for trying disabling extensions.

Hello, could you please provide links to the affected characters?
We replaced the other one with one the player created himself, but this one was created by me, claimed by a player and now can't be viewed / edited by anyone but me:

Thank you! Can you let me know: Were the characters you made for them and unassigned created as Private or Public?

Thank you for the information! I'm going to pass along what you've been able to provide here to the team so they can look a bit further into this. :)
Hello! Any chance there's been a fix for this? I have three players who have experienced this same issue, unfortunately. :/

Thanks! That at least helps me get a fix going, for this. I really appreciate it!

That didn't work unfortunately. I'm encountering the same issue as a player in a campaign. Any ideas when a fix is incoming for this?
Please post a link to your character sheet so someone can look into it for youS

Hi T.L.,
I made some accidental debug progress here. It turns out that there are two links for my character
1. https://www.dndbeyond.com/profile/esteban012/characters/35978420
2. https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/35978420
I can use 1 to edit my character. I cannot edit my character with link 2. Is this expected?
Thanks!

Do you by any chance use a VPN?
