Heya. so the other night i made a Eldritch knight 8, an Arcane trickster 8, and a fiendlock 4. the sheet isnt showing the proper spell slots for the combination. while i shouldnt have any 3rd level spells i should have 4 second level slots and 3 third level slots. Just something you folks should look at.
Can you post a link to your character sheet so the forum moderators can see the character and maybe identify the issue.
Per the multiclassing rules, you should have four 1st level slots and three 2nd level from being EK 8, AT 8 (1/3 of each, rounded down, for a total of 4 spellcasting levels) and two 2nd level warlock spellslots from your 4 levels in warlock
A level 16 eldritch knight has 4, 3, and 3. But Because you add the fighter and rogue levels together and then find the third and round down, which makes you 5th level caster which would still give me 4, 3, and 2. least as far as i understand it.
Also apologies for the bad numbers earlier. i was reading/typing too fast.

I believe this is where the issue is stemming from - you apply the division to the individual class levels first and then you would add the levels of the two classes second. In this instance, as you have a level 8 Fighter and level 8 Rogue - 1/3 of those would each be 2 (rounded down). Then, you would add the two class's levels and be considered a 4th level multiclass spellcaster - which falls in line with the four 1st level spell slots and the three 2nd level spell slots that are on your character sheet.
I think you divide your levels for Eldtrich Knight and Arcane Trickster by three (and round down) before you add them together. So it's 8/3 = 2(.6) plus 8/3 = 2(.6) giving you four levels for spellcasting?
That lines up with your character sheet, you have four 1st, three 2nd (non-warlock) and two 2nd (warlock)
Although this is an old thread, I have the same problem with my lvl 5 druid. According to the PHB, I should have 9 spell slots. 4 in first, 3 in second en 2 in third level. Although somehow I can only do a max number of 8.

Can anyone tell me why I can't select the 9th spell?
”Spell Slots” are not how many spells you can prepare, it’s how many spells you can cast per day, and at what levels.
As a 5th level Druid with a Wisdom of 16, you can prepare a number of spells equal to 5 (your druid level) + 3 (your Wisdom modifier) for a total of 8 spells of 1st through 3rd-level in any combination.
Spellcasting
Drawing on the divine essence of nature itself, you can cast spells to shape that essence to your will. See Spells Rules for the general rules of spellcasting and the Spells Listing for the druid spell list.
Cantrips
At 1st level, you know two cantrips of your choice from the druid spell list. You learn additional druid cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Druid table.
Preparing and Casting Spells
The Druid table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your druid spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these druid spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.
You prepare the list of druid spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the druid spell list. When you do so, choose a number of druid spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your druid level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
For example, if you are a 3rd-level druid, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots. With a Wisdom of 16, your list of prepared spells can include six spells of 1st or 2nd level, in any combination. If you prepare the 1st-level spell cure wounds, you can cast it using a 1st-level or 2nd-level slot. Casting the spell doesn’t remove it from your list of prepared spells.
You can also change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of druid spells requires time spent in prayer and meditation: at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list.
Thanks for the quick response, that's where I went wrong. Prepared spells vs amount of spells cast. Meaning I can prepare 8 different spells, but if I want I could cast one of them 9 times.

Correct, as long as that one is a 1st-level spell. If it’s a 2nd-level spell you could cast it five times, and still have four 1st-level spell slots for your 1st-level spells. And if you use a 3rd-level spell slot to cast a 1st-level spell, it becomes a 3rd-level spell for that casting.
It appears that this topic gets a hit about every year or so and this is my year. I am playing a 5th level bard, college of lore. I should be able to learn 4 - 1st level spells, 3 - second level spells, and 2 - 3rd level spells. "D&D Beyond" is not allowing this. It is enabling to learn 8 spells regardless of which level I select. This is robbing me on 1 learned spell slot (I can learn 8 level 3 spells if I so choose). Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

What you're looking at are your spell slots - think of them as "batteries" that provide the energy to cast spells. A 5th-level Bard knows 3 cantrips and 8 spells of 1st to 3rd level (see the Bard Table for reference.)

You have learned to untangle and reshape the fabric of reality in harmony with your wishes and music. Your spells are part of your vast repertoire, magic that you can tune to different situations. See Spells Rules for the general rules of spellcasting and the Spells Listing for the bard spell list.

For example, if you know the 1st-level spell cure wounds and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast cure wounds using either slot.
Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher
You know four 1st-level spells of your choice from the bard spell list.
The Spells Known column of the Bard table shows when you learn more bard spells of your choice. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the table. For instance, when you reach 3rd level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.
Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the bard spells you know and replace it with another spell from the bard spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
Spell Slots are how many spells you can cast in a day, Spells Known are how many spells your character knows.
Hmmm… 2 years since last post here but I have another that’s not making sense (to me). Doesn’t need a hard/fast answer since I think the outcome is roughly correct, just potentially a glitch in the builder:
It doesn’t matter if I rebuild fresh or whatever, but the builder actually tells me that Ranger 5, Rogue 6, Wizard 9 (dex18, int16, wis13) includes 1x 6th wizard slot (this should not be according to PH I think) but only lets me add up to lvl 5 spells to my book. The sixth lvl even shows up as having a slot (checkbox) to cast from, but nothing lets me add one to my book or prepare one (though my “upcasts” from ranger/gloomstalker show up at sixth). I think the outcome/‘ruling’ is correct in that I can’t add a sixth wizard, but the database shouldn’t be showing me a wizard spell slot at 6th that it won’t let me use, correct? You don’t even need to add in all the details (except the stat increases at feat time) if you just add those levels in order you’ll find this same thing I think, I’ve rebuilt it a few times now). This a thing that needs to be fixed in the builder maybe?
thanks all for considering. in case I wasn’t clear though, I don’t think I should get the 6th lvl slot (not complaining), Is this a glitch that maybe needs looking at(?) or am i misunderstanding why it’s doing this *shrug*. ultimately I’m just taking the 5th slot(s) anyway.. just thought I’d share something odd and ‘maybe’ help lolz… though usually such shares are writer error i suspect:)

From the rules on multiclassing. Seems correct due to ranger levels 9 wizard + 5 Ranger = 11th level in the multiclass spellslot table.
Spell Slots. You determine your available spell slots by adding together all your levels in the bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard classes, and half your levels (rounded down) in the paladin and ranger classes. Use this total to determine your spell slots by consulting the Multiclass Spellcaster table.
If you have more than one spellcasting class, this table might give you spell slots of a level that is higher than the spells you know or can prepare.
^ “If you have more than one spellcasting class, this table might give you spell slots of a level that is higher than the spells you know or can prepare”
Oh yeah, this thanks! As predicted the, “error is mine.” Weird the way it’s written I just read it without taking it in.. maybe could use some emphasis in the explaination, (like a new paragraph header cause it details it more after that, or just a bolding on the second half of that sentence”, but yep, you are correct, I can’t believe I must’ve read it like 50 times lol. Cheers!
So now when I make a 1 wiz/1 Ranger/1 Paladin I get spell slots as a lvl 3 caster: Four 1st lvl and Two 2nd lvl spell slots. That cannot be right. It seems clear it is rounding UP instead of DOWN. Further testing seemed to confirm.
I mean I'd love the slots but it ain't right.
Edit: I guess i need to mention this is all 2014 classes
Edit: Haha ok. After last edit I double checked and I was wrong. 2024 Ranger and Paladin. My mistake.

Just to clarify this for anyone else who reads the thread in the future: this was a change made in the 2024 Player's Handbook; spell slots for multiclass characters with levels in a "half caster" class now count half the levels in that class rounding up, rather than rounding down as in the 2014 rules.

From the rules on multiclassing. Seems correct due to ranger levels 9 wizard + 5 Ranger = 11th level in the multiclass spellslot table.
