I'm making a homebrew race for personal use( running the humblewood setting) and for some reason I can't get my race to show the grouped subrace. I went searching for a reason why and it's from not being an official dnd source?
But why does it need to be official for it to do that? It doesn't make sense to do that, it's for a game set for 5th edition just not from an official dnd source but anyone should be able to make a grouped nest with or without it being official
There are a couple of things homebrew wouldn't do as intended. In particular is the fact that several homebrews have identical names. You could wind up with a race group full of variants that actually have nothing to do with each other, etc.
There is also the fact that race groups have a little more work put into then than simply a group name, like that parent race summary (that is always wrong in 100% of variant races).
A lot boils down to the fact that homebrew (as it currently exists) was a bit of an after thought for DDB, and they have to be careful about what they let use do so we don't break anything.
Thanks for the answer but still, I can't finish my character if I can't pick the subclass.
Is there alternates to dnd beyond that isn't limiting? Or a way to bypass this?
There isn't anything that prevents you from using homebrew. Maybe I misunderstood the problem. You are still able to use race/subraces even if they aren't grouped.
Not sure if you meant subrace when you said subclass. Your original post didn't mention problems with subclasses.
The Cervan race is from the humblewood campaign. There is two subclasses of Cervan. It lets me pick the race but it then won't let me pick the subclass for the race
You keep saying “subclass” do you mean “subrace” instead? If so, you shouldn’t need to pick the parent race, only the subrace. If you built it properly you should not even have a choice to pick the base race.
Okay, and when you made the race you checked of “has subraces” correct? And then you made the subraces and saved them, correct? And now you cannot find them? Rename the subraces: Cervan, [subrace name] so that way they should all at least appear next to each other. Then after you save the subraces re-save the base race. If you set it up properly you will never have a chance to pick the base race, only the two subraces.
Homebrew just won’t get nested like that unless it’s already a “race group.” (Like, if they were a custom version of Hobgoblins you could get them nested with regular hobgoblins.) By naming them the way I suggested it’s the closest you’re gonna get.
Ok so, your homebrew subraces are not going to group up for the reasons I mentioned in my first post. You should still be able to select them, and they should still have all the traits granted by their parent race (which won't show up on list) if you set everything up correctly.

Now I'm confused. Yes I picked the has embraces.
I'm not having an issue of finding them, they pop up but they pop up as separate from the race
If I pick elf as a race, the subclasses would show up as to what kind of elf I wanted to play
That's what I'm talking about that's not working

So you can select them for your character?

Well that's unfortunate, I hope that gets fixed, it's annoying.
