I have a necklace of prayer beads that only contains bless and curing beads, rather than having my character sheet show a load of spells I can not cast with it I thought it best to homebrew a version without the spells I don't have (and the correct number of charges) (using the necklace as a starting point)
I found however that my character sheet only shows that I can cast cure wounds from the necklace at 1st level, this is the case whether or not I enter a 2 in the "cast at spell level" box.
I then made a home brew item using the necklace of prayer beads as a starting point abut without making any changes and it also had cure wounds from the necklace as a 1st level spell.
Is there a way to have cast 2nd level cure wounds from a homebrew necklace?
Yes. I just tested it on an item. I made an item with that spell set to “cast at level” 2 and use 1 charge. It showed up no problem.
What is probably happening is one or both of two things:
After you save the spell, you must then re-save the entire Magic Item using the main “save changes” button.
You probably set cure wounds to consume 1 charge, but then also set bless to do the same, one charge for each bead. Right? The problem is that Bless gets cast at 1st level. So the magic item thinks 1 charge = 1st-level. To make the magic item coding work you would have to set Cure Wounds to 2 charges, but that messes up the charge count, especially since there is no way to create separate pools of charges for each spell.
I recommend not making the whole necklace 1 item, but instead make each bead it’s own item. Then the PC can just add multiples of each bead, and each bead can also then use 1 charge and not care what level spell is cast because of it.
