I recently created a homebrew vampire race with two subraces but when I go to the character builder I can only select from the subraces and not the base parent race. Made sure all three were uploaded, cleared cache, and removed then re-added them to my collection. Nothing seemed to work or change. This question has probably been asked but I'm not finding any solutions. Am I forgetting something here?
This is the intended functionality for homebrew races - by selecting the subrace, the character is automatically receiving the parent race & subrace bonuses.
This is the way homebrew subraces work. It’s actually the way all races used to work here, since with races that have subraces, you can’t just choose the parent race, you have to choose a subrace. (For example, your character can’t simply be an elf, you have to choose wood, high, Drow, etc.) Then DDB created race “groups” for the official races, so in the builder you first choose the parent race (which is actually essentially a folder) and then the subrace or in the case of races with variants instead of sub races, the variant. Homebrew subraces that are “children” of official parent races can be set so they are included in these groups, but there is currently no way to create homebrew race groups. The work around some folks use is to name the subraces so that the parent race name comes first (eg. Elf:wood); that way all the subraces show up together in the list.
