I'm using a 16" MacbookPro to open my character sheet in Chrome. At some point in the last month when I switched to a tab with a character sheet there'a a pause, my computer freezes briefly, the entire screen (not just my browser window) goes black for a second or so, and then everything is fine. I can consistently reproduce this when I switch to character sheet tabs after not having one visible for a while. If I leave a character sheet tab visible everything is fine. This doesn't happen with anything else I use my computer for.
It almost seems like there's some sort of video card switching going on, or maybe a driver is crashing or something. I wouldn't normally assume it had something to do with D&D beyond, but it doesn't happen when I open other more graphically intensive applications like Tabletop Simulator so it's got to be some combination of the character sheet/chrome/mac hardware but I'm not sure what to do to debug.
Any help with this would be appreciated, it's very annoying!
I have same laptop as @dayorbyte and I noticed the same behaviour on Chrome and Safari.
The issue is present only on my characters, if I see others everything is fine, my guess is that it is related to the dice feature. It is very disturbing, is there a way to disable the dice functionality on browser to confirm that is the issue?
This started happening to me on Tabletop Simulator too, and I was able to track it down to being the video card switching from integrated to discrete. It *seems like* the pausing and black screen is an issue with some recent MacOS update because after I upgraded to Big Sur it went away. I had also found some forum posts with similar video card issues reported in the last point release or two of Catalina.
Good to know the dice can be turned off, though, since I never use them.
Same issue here, happened once 10 minutes before a session, working on any other site was absolutely fine, but opening one of my players character sheets caused the same issue. I just replicated the issue today prepping for another session, going to try turning off dice to see if that changes anything
Has anyone found a solution to this? Any time I move away from my D&D Beyond tab and then switch back to the tab a minute later, my computer freezes and the screen flashes black for a moment. It's frustrating.
The issue is from the graphics card switching and some sort of MacOS bug. In my case upgrading fixed it. If you don't want to do that I'd try turning off the dice support (gear icon near the character name in the sheet) since I suspect that's what's causing the discrete graphics card to be required. You could also try restarting your computer if you haven't yet.

Are you running any ad/popup blockers, browser extensions, or a VPN that may be interfering with DDB?

Yes, from the character sheet. Hit the cog symbol (⚙️) next to the character’s name, you can toggle off the blue switch.

I thought I solved it just updating my system to Catalina 10.15.7 but the problem is still there
