I created a dwarf cleric in DDB and went with the Clan Crafter background. When I went to pick my added language, it was automatically assigned as "Dwarvish". Per the rules, Clan Crafter makes you pick the dwarvish language unless you already speak it - then you can pick any other language you want. However, in the DDB character sheet, even though I was a dwarf, it still made me take dwarvish. Maybe the issues is that the races are not automatically assigned their native languages? Regardless, I should be able to pick any language since, by default, a dwarf would know dwarvish.
One of them will grant you Dwarvish, the other shouldn’t as you noted. It usually works, but possibly some adjustments to the code to accommodate Tasha’s is interfering, or perhaps you are using the options Lineage rules and therefore Race is not automatically granting you Dwarvish? Please post a link to your character sheet so someone can look into it for you.
I also made a homebrew copy of Clan Crafter for the heck of it, and it looks like it's from the Languages section of Background, the modifier:
Language - Choose a Language - Dwarvish
The modifier's field is a list of languages to pick from. If the list is empty, you can pick from all available languages, but if there's 1 or more to choose from, you can only pick from among that list, even if there's just 1 and you already know that language.
(This may be a known issue already, but I thought it worth bringing the details to the dev's attention.)Okay, it's a known issue. Apparently the solution is to create a custom background with the features of Clan Crafter, which you can do from the Background selection.
