I'm on Beyond because my DM wants me to be, and while the resources are great, the actual character builder is falling short. While he has all of the books and access to everything, and as such I have access to everything when using Beyond as a resource, when creating a character, it's only pulling up limited races (in the source pulldown, it only has Basic, Elemental Evil Player's Companion, PHB and Unearthed Arcana) and then only gives 8 options for Backgrounds.
Is there something my DM needs to enable, or is this a bug? I want to get my swerve on with my Goblin Monk Far Traveler, damnit!
You need to own the options. If your DM has the books on D&D Beyond itself they can create a campaign to invite you to. Then if any players have a Master subscription either them or the DM (can't remember) can turn on content sharing. After that all members of the campaign can use any content any other member has purchased on D&D Beyond.
You, the DM or anyone else in the campaign need to get the Master Tier subscription. With it, it is possible to enable the sharing and all the content from purchases will be available to everyone.
From your description (having access to everything elsewhere on the site), it sounds like you have already joined the campaign, and that the DM (or someone) has turned on content sharing. My guess is that you are trying to create your character outside of the campaign, as character builder options available through content sharing are only available within the campaign.
To add onto the advice from ArwensDaughter, you must make a character from the join link of the campaign. So copy that link, paste it into your browser, and create a character from there.
from the perspective of a DM, D&D beyond is essentially extremely useful. But also highly monetized. You can use it for some things. But I would do you own character sheets independently of the app. That way you aren’t restricted to maybe seven races and have to purchase the books on digital. The only time it would be really useful is for not in person campaigns. And even then it’s borderline micromanaging of the DM to force you into the app and to give themselves full access to their players’ character sheets. Just my opinion.
