There appears to be no way to get to posts from the drop downs?

Also, is there no way to search posts? That's kind of stunning, or I am unable to find it...

I’m not sure what you mean about “get[ting] to posts from the drop downs.” However, you can definitely search through the forums. Turn your device sideways and you can see this (it needs the wider display):
