No, the logical thing to do is let the pre-order Master Tier do beta testing. Give them access on 9/3. Then the devs can fix bugs before the 9/17 release.
In the other direction as CuddlyEvil, we're in the middle of a long campaign that is planning to switch to the 2024 rules, so I'm wondering if there is a DDB tool planned to convert 2014 characters into 2024 ones. Will I be able to run a process on my monk to update it, or will I have to remake them from scratch using the new builder?
That is unknown at this point.
What do we need to do to get some OFFICIAL response to these questions? I appreciate what @Paladin54 is trying to do by answering everyone, but they don't cite any sources and I'm much more interested in hearing from DDB about what is planned and when we can expect the new rules and features to be available in the character builder. The changes in the 2024 PHB are significant and I'm not interested in trying to get my table to rebuild their characters with buggy or incomplete changes and my particular table will have a hard time implementing the new character options until those updates are in place.
Thanks for saying this, I was reading the thread and just wanted to emphasize that no one has posted any actual answers. We don't even know if they'll be a delay with D&D Beyond functionality. Its entirely possible it'll be live on 9/3, there is no information one way or another.
Keep in mind, unless D&D Beyond specifically changes things, a lot of people are getting access on 9/3 without paying due to content sharing.

So where does this leave those of us who, for the moment at least, are continuing to use v5?
Will D&DB still work for us? Or are we going to be denied the use of what we have paid for - in my case probably less than a year ago?
There has been NO talk of removing 2014 rules and lots of talk on how and when they are compatible.
You will still use what you have in the same way you can still use Legacy content.
The reason for my heartburn on this is that they've done what I fear before with regards to the Eberron races. The versions originally published in the Wayfarer's Guide (which I still have the PDF for) were changed when Rising from the Last War was published and they have since then changed the compendium entries to match the RftLW versions. For example, Warforged used to have three subraces (Envoy, Skirmisher, and Juggernaut), but they no longer exist on DDB in any form, even in the Wayfarer's compendium entry.
My worry is that they're going to make using DDB for a fully 2014 game a pain in the ass to incentivize conversion to the 2024 rules. You'll only get to keep using the 2014 content that was not updated with 2024 despite paying for it.
I'd really like to have this concern officially addressed.
Just to point out: This isn't the same as the 2024 PHB vs 2014 PHB situation. ERftLW was the official book that replaced WGtE, which was playtest material for its entire lifespan.
It's far more likely (especially with 2014 content already being labeled as such in tools such as the character builder) that we're going to see these books introduced the same way Monsters of the Multiverse was, where the reprised races had the old versions marked "Legacy".

Keep in mind the precedent you're talking about are new books for the *current* edition, this is a brand new edition. We haven't seen how this will play out yet on this site.
Nope. Same edition. They've worked ad nauseum to say so, reviewers who are usually negative about D&D have said so, and I've seen it with my own eyes. They aren't overhauling the whole system and building something new from scratch.

They're literally restructuring how classes work. A 2014 subclass on a dndb character sheet is going to look different and have different features than a 2024 one since everyone gets a subclass at level 3. That's pretty drastic compared to making Warforged 1 race rather than 3 subraces. Not to mention backgrounds, how feats are categorized, weapon masteries, schools of magic are different... list goes on and on. Its essentially 5.5 even if they dont call it that.
And thats what were waiting on an official response for: How and when will we see these changes? Is there a toggle for '14 and '24? If i choose a subclass not in the 2024 rules will it only be available for a 2014 sheet or will they be restructured and updated to a 2024 class? Are all weapons updating to 2024 or will there still be 2014 weapons available? There's so many questions about how these changes will work on the site. Really wish a someone from DNDB would answer and not just randos with no information other than vibes answering.

If this is historically the way it works ... and I really hope you are right because I would love to start using the tools on 9/3 instead of just reading the books ... then why don't they just say so? There is no reason to assume character creation access can't be gated just like read access. Content sharing gives access to compendium access now.
