This is a requirement going forwards. I went from using this site constantly to never at all. Unsubbed. Will not sub back with WOTC as they are now. This is ridiculous - I just tried to search some spells on here, and only got the new edition spells. I’ve been on this site since nearly day 1. I was happy to pay for my books on here. Now I can’t even see the versions of content I already own… for versions of spells that are barely changed, just because WOTC decided they wanted me to pay for them again? Even filtering for “Player’s Handbook (2014)” specifically, no results came up. Lmfao. Not spending another dime on this game again. Peace everyone, it was fun while it lasted!
Edit: Realized my error with the above. I was filtering spells based on class, and didn’t filter through <class name> 2014 instead of <class name>. Which, in a sense is my mistake, but that’s just bad design, c’mon now…
D&D Beyond has been a great platform in the past for two things: easily locating information and character sheets. The introduction of the 2024 rules and character options has made this an absolute disaster. Character sheets are confusing to set up, especially for new players, and some functionality has changed or broken for 2014 with the 2024 rules. Searching for spells/items/rules is tedious. And even if I wanted to switch to the 2024 ruleset completely--which I'm not keen on; it feels like the playtesting was very rushed to get out books for the 50th anniversary--I can't do that until I can afford to buy physical player's handbooks for a half dozen teenagers who can't use D&D Beyond for various reasons. My public library certainly can't justify that cost.
D&D Beyond used to be very new-player friendly, and now it's overwhelming and off-putting. What are all the families buying Starter Kits or Essentials Kits this holiday season going to think when they come here and all the rules they just learned have changed? Aside from the free 2024 rules, there's no support for youth clubs or groups with the new rules. And there's so many copies of the 2014 rules out there that someone will pick up and get excited about. This transition has been so poorly handled.
I have bought so many books on D&D Beyond, and I've had a Master's Tier subscription for several years. It's currently about to run out, and I'm agonizing over whether to renew it. I still need it for campaigns, but the usability of the platform has dropped so much since I started those campaigns. I can't trust that it's going to get better. If I renew, I think it's going to have to be for my own transition: to another platform entirely.
I completely agree with you. I'd be very happy to continue my subscription to D&D Beyond, but the 2024 rules bleed onto our character sheets is becoming really annoying, not to mention the terrible search functionality and the very poor design. I've no idea why they refuse to allow their customers to choose which game system they want to play and provide the means to do that. All they need is an actual toggle to turn off all content from the game rules they aren't using. Other companies are able to do this -- Why can't Wizards? I can only assume, for whatever reason, they simply don't want to. This makes no sense to me as people will leave D&D Beyond for other platforms that can do this very basic thing.
I'm looking into alternatives to D&D Beyond, and to be honest not finding too much. I believe this will certainly change as when there is a demand for something it will be produced. By not listening to their current paying customers, I think WotC is making a rather large mistake here. Not only will they alienate curren't paying customers, they will also foster an image they may not want.
For the time being, I'll stay with D&D Beyond. But should I find an alternative our group is comfortable with we'll switch at that point. And paper and pencil is still always an option.

Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, and Foundry are the three other official toolsets. Personally for me, and I assume most people, Foundry is not an acceptable alternative since they lack at least 90% of the official books. I have not tried them, but Roll20 and Fantasy Gounds seem like the best alternatives in my opinion.
If a person is savvy with Excel or Sheets, they can be a decent alternative or supplement to Beyond's character sheets. They can be a hassle to set up (or just ask someone who has set one up already), but once it is set up, you can practically create unlimited character sheets and easily share content with your players for free. Homebrew also would not be as limited.

This is the route I am going, used physical books and spreadsheets. I will not do business with wizbro again. I would love to be able to sell my account to someone that would use it.

If you already paid for content on here, you might as well use it. Even without the character builder/sheets, Beyond still has its uses, at least for me. The database is still by and large the same, and it does not really make sense for me to port the entire thing over, considering how massive the database is and how tedious it would be.
You've lost another customer over this. I've been playing PF2E for a while and wanted to re-subscribe to DNDBeyond to run a holiday adventure for friends, only to discover the legacy content is unusuable for me in its current state. And this isn't the first offense for WOTC, they did this to 4E as well. After 40 years of buying DND books starting with the boxed sets, I'm finished with it. You need to treat your customers better than this, especially with what you're charging for digital assets.
I have so many complaints. I only bought all my digital content about 1-1.5 years ago. There is so many broken functions, and references and links. I would seriously consider filing a charge-back if I thought it would go through.
Also, WHY is the 2014 Players Handbook not on this drop-down????? (Just kidding, I know why. It's because they are shoving this content down our throats and some minor inconveniences here and there they can play dumb while we are pressured to shell out money for the new editions.)

I don't disagree the content has use without the character building tools, but the tools and ease of use was the only reason I bought anything here now it is no longer easy to use. My disgust with wizbro's choices since acquiring this site is not something I'm willing to stomach. I'd rather put the time and effort in building sheets and write the money off than use the site.

Agreed, though I will not stoop to piracy, nor do I condone it. I also know it happens a lot when businesses forget how easy it is to choose it over the official content.

Im just leaving the quote here. What I am saying is that dndbeyond is running head first into a service problem, in my opinion. But I am not running their business, this is just a consumer perspective.
Sorry D&D Beyond, you guys really screwed this up.
You charged me for a year of content and I cannot use the character builder the way I want.
I agree that I shouldn't have to use any of the 2024 content. You should hold up your end of the sale agreement and continue to provide the content that was paid for.
For example:
I tried to build a Barbarian today. Where is the Totem Warrior from the 2014 PHB? I paid for a full book, and you should continue that content indefinitely.
I tried to build a Druid Circle of the Stars recently, and wasn't able to. I paid for the book with that content in it also, and I cannot get it now.
I wonder if a class action lawsuit is in order.
Doubtful that I will renew. I wonder if enough people quit they will get the message.

I'm very aggravated.
Take a breath. None of your purchased content has been removed and no one is forcing you to do anything.
You just need to use the right version of the class. Make sure you have "2014 Rules" and "Expanded Rules" checked on the Home tab of the character builder, and change your class to the 2014 version.
All I need is a 2024 Core Rules checkbox on page 1 of the Character Builder. That way I can UNcheck it, and not have to worry that my players and I may be seeing the wrong content in our 5e games.
I really wish that we could elect to use and see ONLY the source materials that we own or agree to share with our group, and not have to sift through mounds of rules and search results that don't apply.
Anyhow, if the link works, here's what we need the most right now (I couldn't figure out how to insert the jpeg directly into the post):

This isn't helpful. Please stop trying to gaslight people into thinking a site-breaking issue for non-2024 players is anything otherwise.
While D&D Beyond has certainly made a horrible mess of this rollout from start to finish, I would not call this specific thing a "site-breaking issue" since, as I said, no one's purchased content has actually been removed and no one is being forced to do anything. Telling people that is not "gaslighting", and neither is helping them to learn how to use the tool properly.
If you want to cancel your subscription and not purchase the new products, go ahead. That's your choice. Please don't assume everyone who doesn't make the same choice you did is acting maliciously.

I purchased and have in my inventory the 2014 Players handbook as a sourcebook.
I want FULL access to all of its information in my character sheet and to LIMIT my character to 2014 ONLY.
WHY IS THIS SO DIFFICULT??
Stop it, D&D Beyond. You are forcing people out. If I cannot use the 2014 PHB ONLY, I will delete my account.
