I ran out of character slots in a heart beat and I hope you guys are working on something that adds more. I will say that DnD beyond really helps and I really just want more of it
Why: Because every character slot is data that they have to store on their servers and the more data, the bigger and more amount of servers requires and the more upkeep and maintenance needed. It reduces the unnecessary wastage of storage space for abandoned accounts and protects against malicious use: give everyone the ability to fill your data storage for free and the Ever-Annoying-Bad-Peeps can run bots that routinely create basic characters over and over (noting there is a quick copy action available, such an exploit takes a couple of mins to set up and no expensive/hard to get software to do it: you just have a script on a browser re-submit the create character data over and over with auto-refresher/auto-clicker script. The creation of a sheet runs a lot of script in background to create that data onto the database. Set this up on some points and voila: easy DoS attack as they run the servers out of storage space, lagging it and slowing it down. The cap prevents this: once the limit is reached no more chars are made on the account. Bad Peeps aren't going to pay for the ability to get unlimited char slots because this creates an easy trail of identification.
You can purchase a Hero or Master tier subscription here. Either one will unlock unlimited character slots.

I personally dont have a problem with 6 character slots. I use 1 for build testing, 4 for PCs (only 3 are active), and 1 is build I'm going to turn into a monster (eventually).
The only reason I would need more is if I wanted a character for planning each PC at different levels or if I want DMPCs.
Shouldn't additional character slots be added when you buy something like the PHB?
I can understand the technical issues and security issues of prevention as well as cost/maintenance and needing ways to both protect and fund services rendered. However, since bad actors likely won't pay anything to try and screw a server and service over, most of the time, when something like a legit client buys one of the items in the shop, like the PHB, I think we should also get a couple more character slots along side the content unlock of the book.

The thing is, when you buy a book, you are buying a WotC product. DDB may not be able to bundle their own products with WotC's (I obviously don't know the details).
DDB provides a service, and it provides access to that service for free (character sheets, campaign manager, homebrew, searchable lists, and more coming). The only thing DDB sells themself is a subscription for unlimited access to the services they provide for free, and also a sub to share the WotC products you buy from them with your campaign.
1 or 2 character slots per purchased sourcebook would be a good compromise.
Again, that is probably up to Wizards, not Beyond, whether they can bundle certain stuff.
Storing data is also an ongoing expenditure, and I think it makes more sense for the business to separate them rather than bundling them together. Unless you are operating on a scale like Google and Amazon, it might not make financial sense for Beyond to sell character slots for a one time fee.
let us purchase individual character slots instead of subscriptioning everything... that should pay for any additional data storing real easy. Stop being lazy.

It's not laziness.
Also, a one-time payment does not cover years of maintenance and storage needed. It's one thing if you actively used that extra slot for years but another if you abandoned your account for whatever reason (including reasons not of your own control). That is needless storage and maintenance for something that may never be used ever again. Oh and if you put an activity time-limit? Then those who do return will complain - demanding to get back what they bought.
The subscription method is the safest, most effective and most future-proof way to provide this while covering all bases and contingencies.

I am literally the dungeon master and I have 7 people in my group. I basically need to have one more character slot. And I am not willing to make a purchase.
I export my characters to PDFs. Then I enter them in again as needed to level them up and then export as PDFs. Then only your PCs storage space to worry about. :)
Have them make their own characters and free up your character slots. If you aren't making purchases, it isn't like you are making the characters because you have owned content they need.

The expected use case for D&D Beyond is each of your players would have their own account and use that to make their own character in a campaign created by you. If you want to share your content with them, one of you would need a master tier subscription.
But even if you're making the characters for them, they don't need to be taking up your slots. Once you've made a character, unassign it and have a player claim it. Once they've claimed it, it no longer counts against your character limit.
Basically there's zero need for you to have additional character slots if you just use the tool as intended.
First of all, I am NOT making their characters. I invite them over and they make it. They do not have their own account on dnd beyond, but I am still thankful for the help.

Probably worth noting that sharing your D&D Beyond account can be considered a violation of the terms of service. Probably best just getting them to make their own accounts.

Why are you, the DM, making their characters?
That seems...unusual.

You could always make an alt account.
"Uh, I have Illusory Script. I think I can read that."
I just tried, but it said that there was an error...
You'd probably have to make a new google account as well. I've never done it myself, as I've never seen the need to.
Personally, I think that your players should get accounts of their own, no?
