I'm homebrewing (or revisiting some of my homebrew) after several months. There's a new "Additional Spell List" feature in Backgrounds, Races, Subclasses....
What is the difference between that feature and the "Additional Specific Spells" box in (for e.g.) the subclass creation process, or subclass feature > Spells editing option....
I'm getting confused.
Also, an option I would *love* to see is class/subclass specific spell lists (i.e. fully customizable spell lists that could include homebrew spells and exclude some core spells).
If the subclass is for an Artificer, Cleric, Druid, or Paladin, then “additional specific spells” will add those spells to their subclass spell list which means they will be automatically “always prepared” without taking up a prepared spell on their list. That messes things up especially for Cantrips.
The “additional spell list” will simply add those spells to their regular spell list for them to learn if they choose.
For Bards, Rangers, Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Wizards it really does not make a difference which one you use. At least not currently.
Now that I think of it, I did have a problem with my homebrew Cleric subclasses in that regard (i.e. too many Always prepared spells). Glad to know I can now fix that!
Ugh, it didn't solve the problem for me. I have created numerous subclass-specific homebrew spells. For example, "Analyze Opponent". In the spell's creation Available for Classes, I had selected "Cleric - Knowledge Domain" and "Wizard - School of Divination". Adding the "Cleric -- Knowledge Domain" subclass treats the spell as if it was an "Always Prepared" domain spell, and the homebrew spell creation won't allow me to save the spell without selectin at least one class or subclass. I don't want the spell available for *all* clerics and wizards, and I thought I'd be able to use that new "Additional Spell List" feature to manually add this (and similar homebrew spells) to subclasses. But it's a Catch-22 situation. Can't save the spell without choosing a class or subclass, and useless to add it to the Additional Spell List if it's already "Always Prepared" because of that "Available for Classes" selection. :(
Edit: I have found a solution: select "Wizard - School of Divination" only as option for "Available for Classes". Then create a copy of Knowledge cleric and use the Additional Spell List to add the spell. (Only works because I also want that specific spell also available to the wizard class. Don't know what I'd do if I had a homebrew spell only specific to a particular cleric, druid, or paladin subclass).

Create a homebrew Barbarian subclass called “placeholder” and add Spellcasting and set “can cast spells” to yes and whatever you want as the Ability and add no other class features. Then you will be able to set “placeholder” as the spell list for those spells.

I hope that helps.
