I thought someone said that the company Curse was owned by Twitch. So go figure.
Whats the real issue with signing up with Twitch? Oh wait someones been banned from Twitch for trolling? Okay okay, so thats actually a good thing. jk.
What is the real issue with signing up with Twitch?
Just my 10¢ right. I had an amazon account, then I signed into twitch with that, and was given some extra bonuses for having Amazon prime. Its beyond me why you wouldn't want something hosted through twitch and amazon.
I hated creating another account this time for Twitch. I have never used twitch and had no plans for to. I am only using it for this. Please ad AppleID or Google or facebook log in.
Not sure if it's wise to step into this thread yet, but I'm a bold guy...
Wanted to touch base and say that we appreciate the feedback here and definitely "hear" you. Please remember that this is the first phase of the beta!
Thanks again for the feedback and the interest - looking forward to the rest of the adventure.
It seems like "new" Beta testers get really uptight about the way a product is launched in Beta testing. Crying and whining about your personal nuances of the current state of the site to the mods is probably the worst way to go about getting your point across. The whole reason for a Beta test is so that the developers can get a general idea of what the user wants from their product. Constructive criticism and a resolution provided by you to the devs of improvements that can be made will get you a lot further. Xanathar, thanks for touching base on this thread.
So you don't have an amazon account? Its the same thing. Twitch and Amazon.
And that's the magic answer because...?
Not everyone has all, or any, of these accounts. Not everyone wants all, or any, of these accounts. Whats wrong with good old fashioned, hardware driven software? Pop it in my PC and have access to what I need with out an internet connection. Every time I turn around it's join this account or join that account. And every time I join an account, it's not long before I have to spend money on something or other to get the complete package, or utilize a service to it's full potential, or some other reason to get more money out of my wallet. I have been playing D&D for decades. Bought the first edition brand new off the shelf and have been playing ever since, but the longer I play, the more expensive it becomes, and the more demanding the extra material becomes. I didn't invest in D&D, I play D&D.
At this point, my biggest concern is longevity of this project. In the past, not a single one of the D&D "Tools" has ever reached full completion or delivered as promised. Everyone of them stopped being supported when the bottom line caved.
I still play AD&D with some friends, 3rd with others and 4th with yet another group. More than half of my players have zero access to the internet, let alone accounts all over it.
Even so, all the old electronic and online tools are useless for one reason or another. At least with the 2nd Ed Tools, I can still do some creative works, but whenever I overtax the system, I have to gut it for stuff not pertinent to a given campaign. No such luck with online tools. Once you pull that plug, you have effectively abandoned us.
If I'm going to have to put myself out there yet again for my players, and apparently I am, not just financially, but online with yet another account, I'd like some reassurances that the end result will not die off and set in the shadows for eternity when you guys get tired of it or when your investors want to pull the plug. Just seems fair.
Using twitch is fine. This should allow you the ability, later on, to latch on to some pretty amazing D&D groups that are using that venue.
Also, I'm glad you did not go with the idea of creating your own user base. I appreciate that this account system is linked to something other than facebook.
D&D Beyond is being developed by Curse. Curse is owned by Twitch. Twitch is owned by Amazon.
Given this, I'd be more than happy to log in through my Amazon account. It's an option that more people are likely to have, at that.
Especially if each book's content must be repurchased to be used, at least an amazon login would allow "confirmed purchase" credit of any previously owned books.
So you don't have an amazon account? Its the same thing. Twitch and Amazon.

My two cents.
Its the magic answer.... because you only need an Amazon username and password and link it to Twitch, and then that is linked to D&D Beyond.
Well yeah I can understand not wanting to create another account. Exactly how are we supposed to access the site, and pay the future subscription without an account?
From as far as I can tell, you only need one account. A twitch account (which is conveniently linked to Amazon and D&D Beyond) Perhaps if we purchased products from Amazon that would give Curse an incentive to offer discounts for their products that they are releasing (perhaps not)
So as far as I know, the 4th Edition subscription scheme that was updated frequently (ended only because Wotc D&D moved to D&D Next) was a full D&D Tools kit. I used it frequently. I was also impressed with how every Digital Dungeon and Dragon magazine was included with the subscription. Nothing beats reading those articles. Before that was 3.5 so I have no idea what software they used, did they used minimal software on their site? Not sure about that one.
It looks like there will be content to purchase for good, I am assuming that this will be a license that the purchasers owns and can download their material for life. But I hate to assume and make an ass out of u and me
For subscription based, I would think that once the site ends, the subscriptions would end. Common Sense. Curse have already stated they will be using a subscription based membership. I assume that will exclude the OGL, but will include the character builder, access to the source books, and maybe hopefully fingers crossed, they release Dungeon and Dragon magazine again ( However I sort of feel that's been lost to Dragon+)
The great thing is. If you don't want to use D&D Beyond, then its your choice as a person in a free country not to use it. If you have software or website that you prefer, as I am sure some will, then those people are free to use it.
Again a lot of assumptions. Sorry !
EDIT: I see your main issue is that you would really really really like a downloadable software that has all the materials in. I understand that too. It would be great. Mostly they get hacked and you find yourself online anyway looking for mods, but I see where you are coming from and wished the world still run like that.
So you don't have an amazon account? Its the same thing. Twitch and Amazon.

Well you have the books, DM screen and dice right? Why do you need software?
We at Curse, are apart of Twitch. All our sites going forward are using Twitch logins, as we start letting people merge their curse accounts into twitch
thanks for letting us know that.
personally, i don't have a problem with logging in via twitch. i'm actually looking forward to seeing if there will be some integration with twitch itself. i already use it to stream MMO game play and i think it would be cool to stream D&D play, a la Critical Role and others. :)
I am greatly confused by everyone's hatred of twitch. Why are so many insulted by something as simple as a Twitch account, especially if you will only ever use it for D&DB? Personally never use twitch, except for watching something like 1 stream ever, but it does not bother me at all. What is the put-down that I am not understanding?
While I personally have no issues using my Twitch account, I know people who will flat out never use this service if that's the only way to log in. Here's an account of the conversation between me and my DM:
ME: So currently D&D Beyond requires a Twitch account to log in ME: (it uses Twitch for a Single Sign On service, probably because Twitch owns Curse) DM: I saw that, yes ME: Thoughts? DM: grossss DM: I mean it makes sense business wise DM: but now I won't ever use it
I knew this would be the response when I asked the question, based on previous talks we've had about things with twitch integration (the Streamline game for example). I figured I'd check anyway.
Please at least give us a 2nd way to log in, even if Twitch is the default (even Amazon might work). Otherwise there's going to be a subset of the population that will never even consider signing up based on that one thing.
I had a twitch account but I only made it so I could test the streaming from ps4 and haven't used it since, I'm not opposed to using twitch I just don't know what purpose it serveseems for this site.

This made me seriously consider not signing up. don't use Twitch I don't even watch Twitch. Id rather their be a dedicated login to D&DB, or let us link some other service that we already have. Allow us to sync to any other services we use. For Example. I login using my Facebook. in my profile settings, I can sync it to Twitch, DCI, Google, Vampire Freaks, or whatever else I might want to talk about this on. Variety is good. Exclusive logins to a service a small number of people even know exists is not. This feels like Twitch trying to bolster their user numbers, at our inconvenience.

Let them finish developing the tools first - I'd much rather that time is spent focussing on that and then they can add further authentication mechanisms later.
To be blunt - if people refuse to use a Twitch account to help with beta testing, then that's fine, they can wait until the product is finished and they're probably not the sort of person that would provide useful feedback anyway.

dndbeyond is Curse which is Twitch and it makes sense from a developer point of view to use an existing authentication system as it saves a large amount of time in not having to write a whole new authentication system, which then needs to go through security testing etc etc
Welcome to the world of microservices, it's the way things are going and I suggest people get used to it.

My thoughts exactly, I get the feeling there are certain people who really just don't like the idea of this project full stop for whatever reason and are determined to undermine it at the slightest opportunity. This is a total non-issue.

I get the inheritance of ownership. Twitch just seemed a strange account to use
