What are the realistic chances of a licensing contract with Fantasy Grounds to allow those of us who have purchased official D&D content through D&D Beyond to utilize that content on Fantasy Grounds? I've purchased literally every single thing that D&D Beyond has to offer, and after over $1k in digital merchandise, the last thing I want to do is drop another $1k to use the same items on another platform. If both are linked to the Wizards of the Coast official site, why the disconnect?
At this point, I'd like to see D&D Beyond market their own Virtual Table Top and offer the ability to link digital content seamlessly. Heck, I'd pay a subscription fee for that. Put it on STEAM, add it to the official page, use Discord, whatever. I just don't want to have to purchase the same content 4 times whenever there is a new platform.
You'd have to convince Wizards of the Coast to allow such licensing. DDB is not WOTC but is, like Fantasy Grounds, a company that has a license from Wizards. DDB is working towards a "virtual gaming space," but it will be a while before they are there. There are some community projects that integrate DDB with some existing VTTs (like Roll 20 and Foundry) but 1) they are officially unsupported and could break as things here on DDB shift and 2) I don't think there are such tools for Fantasy Grounds, in part because Fantasy Grounds (as I understand it) is a download and not web based in the way that Roll29 and Foundry are.
Between Roll20 and Foundry, what is your preference? Simply based on the product itself and nothing to do with cost barriers. What do you think is the ideal setup for a DM or new players?

I don't use either, so I'm afraid I'm no help there. hopefully some other folks who have used on or the other or both will stop by and provide some input.
I will say that if all you want is a simple map with tokens, fog of war, etc. and a simpler learning curve, you might look at owlbear.rodeo. I heard about it recently, have poked around a little bit, and am planning to try it for my next session. No DDB integration, but it is free and pretty simple. Sly Flourish has a written article about owlbear rodeo here, and a video about it here.
Certainly worth a look. I sincerely appreciate the help. Transitioning from the Face to the DM has been a nifty learning experience, especially when having to do so much of it online, given the apocalypse. You're doing Pelor's work out here!
I would definitely recommend Foundry over Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds. Head over to the Foundry discord and ask some questions and test it out for free 🙂

"No pity, no remorse, no fear!"
