There MUST be a way to validate a physical purchase for usage in the D&D Beyond Apps and if there isn't, you should be working on a solution.
I'm sure many of us have already spent hundreds of dollars on physical versions of D&D books and would love the opportunity to utilize these great new apps and all they have to offer without repurchasing all the content they already have. This feels like a money grab and it's leaving a bad taste in my mouth.
I have beautiful collector's editions of the PHB, DMG, and MM but I'm expected to pay another $90 to have access to them for use in the D&D Beyond applications. Not cool.
Perhaps allowing us to send receipts or proof of purchase would afford us an unlock code for the appropriate books in the app.
I was excited about the idea of having the character sheets stored digitally so that my children could more easily manage and care for their character sheets -- the Player App seemed like the perfect solution.
WotC aren't going to take a paycut to make this happen.
D&D Beyond can't afford to take such a paycut.
Nobody wins.
It will never happen.
For the same reason buying a game from the Playstation digital store doesn't grant you a free version from the Xbox Live store.

Would you purchase the PHB and DMG in store A, then walk into store B and ask for a second copy of both books, Gale Force 9's spell and magic item cards for free? Because that's essentially what you are asking for here.
What you gotta understand is, this website is not some official tool maintained by the company that makes the game D&D. This site is owned by a completely separate company from the game’s publisher. This website is an online digital bookstore that only sells D&D stuff.
Think of this site like a restaurant and the digital tools like the character sheet as the “free salad bar with entree purchase” and the books as the entrees. You wouldn’t go to Restaurant A for dinner, and then go to Restaurant B and demand the free salad bar; would you?
Couldn't you guys at least find a way to give us a discount on the books for already having the physical copies? I don't buy the physical copies, so it wouldn't affect me all that much, but I see other people talk about this issue of already owning the books and needing to purchase them again. Like, would it be possible for us to scan the cover of the book and receive a code? I'm not sure if I'm just repeating the OP's question with a different outcome (a discount instead of for free), but that's what I have.

I totally agree with what you are saying, but everyone else is quick to shut it down. I think what you are asking is a great idea
