I'm thinking about creating a level 2 Artificer/ level 4 Wizard (character level 6) character. Would this allow me to take level 6 infusion, like boots of the winding path, because my character level is 6? Or. Am I only allowed to pick level 2 infusions because of my Artificer class level?
Like any (... most?) class abilities, they scale with your class' level not your character level. Otherwise, there'd be a whole horde of only level dip abuse going on. Would be awesome though. From memory, only proficiency and cantrips scale with character level.

There are some class features and racial traits that specifically scale with the character’s Proficiency bonus, mostly in either Tasha’s or coming in the next few releases. Those features & Traits specifically state that though.
According to the entry for those boots “Prerequisite: 6th-level artificer” so it looks like you will have to take a straight 6th-level artificer to access that infusion. Some of the infusions are not artificer level locked, so you do have other choices.
Yeah, the only class features that scale with character level instead of class are ones that scale specifically with proficiency bonus. This is mostly in newer content, but it's sort of always existed through DC values tied to your spells or other abilities like battlemaster.
Also if you have multiple spellcaster classes of the same 'tier' I think your available spell slots scale up, but not your spell selection from a particular class.
As far as I know though spell slots and proficiency bonus are the only class related things that can scale up like that when multiclassing.

Hello there Blu_Technician,
According to the entry for those boots “Prerequisite: 6th-level artificer” so it looks like you will have to take a straight 6th-level artificer to access that infusion. Some of the infusions are not artificer level locked, so you do have other choices.

Ok, thank you all for your help, and for clarifying that for me!
