I have the sourcebook bundle and was looking at picking up the Legendary bundle because it gives a bigger discount than the Adventure bundle. I do have a few books from the Adventure bundle already, and figured since I had the Sourcebook bundle, they should be the same price. For some reason, though, the Legendary bundle is $60 more expensive. I did the math and a quick checklist of books in the bundles and the ones I don't have are the exact same between both bundles. Is there something in the Legendary bundle I'm missing in this? Dice, or something?
It's probably because you got some of the books in the sourcebook bundle at a discount. The legendary bundle deducted the price you paid for each book from its cost, rather than the price of the book itself.

Do you really think DDB would give someone a discount, and then take it back?

I have some books purchased from both Sourcebook and Adventure bundles, mostly bought during sales, and looking at the Marketplace page for all the bundles, Legendary would still be cheaper than buying both. Double-check your math on there, and if Legendary is still more expensive, drop a message in the Bugs forum

They credit $ paid towards books in the bundle not cost of books owned in the bundle. So if you buy a book on sale the bundle price only drops by what you paid

Well, there is, because it's cheaper than buying it separately if that's all you're getting. It may not save you money if you're buying it piecemeal in the long run (apart from having the difference in your bank account earning you interest) if you but a smaller bundle in a sale and then buy an encompassing bundle afterwards, but it will save you money if you're just going to buy the bundle that's on sale.

I'll have to double check next time there is a sale, i think the ongoing bundle discount stacks with the sale price. That said, at this stage you are probably unlikely to make up the difference in cost between buying everything when its 20% off vs the bundle price with stacked discount going forward.

So?
If you get the smaller bundle and never buy the larger one (because you don't want it or whatever), then you've gotten a really good deal.
If you get, say, a $20 discount that gets charged back when you buy the larger bundle 6 months later, that's still $20 you've had in your bank account, earning you interest, for the 6 months. Sure, it's not as cheap as if you bought the bundle on the cheap and still got the full discount...but thatntheyre letting you get the bundle and have your old purchases count towards the price is a very proconsumer position, so.

Hello AntonSirius,
I am not sure myself because I do not usually pay much attention to the sales, but don't those sales typically start after preorders end? If so, the smaller discount also gives vanity items that are not included in those sales. I imagine that would matter to some.
Short version: You can either buy a bundle now and be credited every $ you have spent on included content toward the bundle (in the case of the legendary bundle this is 15% less than full price) or you can wait for sales and get a better price on any books you actually want.
If you bought something on sale you have access to it, if you want the ongoing 10%-15% discount from owning the bundle you have to pay the bundle price. If i remember correctly there has only been 1 sale that impacted bundles, but there seem to be sales in the 20% range for books fairly often.
I don't regret buying the legendary bundle when i did (it was in the $500 range back then) but its probably not cost effective now assuming you are patient enough to wait for a sale(since there are only a couple years of books before we find out how DDB will be treated/ will treat an edition update/change).
Edit: as much as i would like it to credit by book value instead of exact cash spent, It's still better than other industries/sales locations in my experience. Example being Game of the Year editions of games where you buy the game and all the dlc, doesn't matter if you already have any of the content you are paying full price (damn you skyrim ;) )

Sure. Because if you bought a copy of Halo CE months ago on sale for $3 instead of $5, and then now you insist that you should get the $3 off of the Master Collection (let alone the $5 which you never paid in the first place) you'd be laughed at. Maybe not to your face, but definitely in the staff room.
That you can buy parts of a book or collection and still get the same overall discount on the overall purchase in very proconsumer and actually makes little sense. The point of a discounted bundle from the business POV is that you're guaranteeing a large purchase and to encourage you, they knock a bit off. Buying it piecemeal defies the point of that.
DDB is being very proconsumer in still allowing customers to get the same discount on bulk buying, even if they're not bulk buying. You're complaining that the company going a lot further than required or could be expected to go isn't going even further and allowing you to stack discounts on top of discounts that shouldn't even be expected. There are not many companies that would allow you to keep the bundle discount of buying all products when you are buying piecemeal. I mean, KFC won't even let me claim my free reward and have one of their offers on the same transaction.
So yeah, while it's not as beneficial as you'd like, the setup is still very proconsumer.

Thank you for providing an excellent example of how resigned to abuse from big publishers gamers have become. Imagine, someone not being willing to pay all over again for something they already own...
Anyway, this is all a side discussion. There's no reason the Legendary Bundle should be more expensive for anyone -- regardless of what they've already purchased -- than the lesser bundles added together, since it's offering a bigger discount on the exact same things

I have three adventure books (Saltmarsh, Yawning Portal, and Dragon Heist). Outside of this, like it shows, I have the sourcebook bundle.
From what I'm understanding that may be happening based on the comments, is that when I bought my source books, some of them were on sale/had a promo code (they did), and because of this, I'm being charged the difference/penalized for taking advantage of a sale?
I went back through my purchases, and this is the savings breakdown.
$10 off PHB Total saved: $10
7.5 off Tasha 7.5 Saltmarsh 7.5 Dragon Heist Total saved: $32.50
6 DMG 6 MM 5 Yawning 6 Xanathar 6 AI 6 Van Richten Total saved: $35
Sourcebook bundle purchased for 148.25. Total saved: unknown-unsure how to tabulate, and possibly charged for the savings of the books I already purchased?
Adding all the savings I can understand up, I saved $47.50 on Sourcebooks, and $20 on adventures because of sales/promos which leaves about ~$11 unaccounted for in price difference between Adventure and Legendary bundles.
Can anyone see if I messed up on this somehow, or is this something to reach out to support about? I initially just wanted to know why there was a difference in price for the same exact thing. Surely they're not charging a premium to get a 15% discount on future purchases?
Surely they're not charging a premium to get a 15% discount on future purchases?
That might be what it amounts to, yeah.
Let's take a look from a different angle. Based on the Legendary pricing you're being offered, you've already spent $375.65 on individual books
$64.97 of that was for adventures (based on that bundle's pricing), so $310.68 must have been on the various parts of the Sourcebook Bundle
Do those numbers match your purchase history?

The best way to think of bundles is to think of them as buckets and the individual books as smaller cups (and you can extend the analogy to individual bundles inside books to be spoons and individual options can be water droplets). If you want to own something, you have to fill it up. Every time you spend money on a book, you fill up a cup, and you pour it down the bucket. If you use discounts, while the cup you want to fill up got smaller, it also fills up the bucket slower since the bucket did not get any smaller. Just because you own everything on the site does not necessarily mean you own the bucket, as you will still need to fill up the rest of the bucket to own it.
In other words, if you plan to buy the bucket eventually, there is no point in buying anything with a discount since you will need to pay for the difference later anyways.
If you want to save the most money and own the Legendary Bundle, your best bet is to wait until Thanksgiving/Black Friday/Cyber Monday and Christmas, as those are the only two times I recall when buckets get smaller, i.e.: there is a sale on bundles.
If you want to save the most money, own the Legendary Bundle, AND get the preorder perks, then only purchase the preoders before they are released so you get the perks, and then wait until the holidays to purchase everything else. Personally, I would also wait before purchasing your preorders in case there is a sale that happens between now and release, and you can always purchase the preorders on the last one or two days before release if there is no sale. While the final price you will pay will still be the same, temporarily holding on to those extra few dollars in your bank account provides an extra thin layer of security between now and the release of books, so in case shit hits the fan, you have a few extra bucks in your wallet for emergency purchases. That extra $20 or $30 could mean the difference between half a tank of gas with a can of beans or being stranded and starving in the middle of a shitstorm. Basically, you want to hold on to your cash for as long as possible, and only let go of your cash when it is absolutely necessary.
I have three adventure books (Saltmarsh, Yawning Portal, and Dragon Heist). Outside of this, like it shows, I have the sourcebook bundle.
I think i know what's happening (and customer support should be able to verify).
Have any sourcebooks come out (that you haven't bought) since you bought the sourcebook bundle? When you buy a bundle you get everything that currently exists under its umbrella (Sourcebooks under sourcebook bundle, everything under legendary) and get a discount going forward when you buy books released later(basically the bundle price).
If you bought the sourcebook bundle and then a new sourcebook came out, the cost of that new book is in your legendary bundle price. Your legendary bundle price looks like it costs about 2 books more than the adventure bundle.
Edit: For clarity, if I am correct you are not being charged a premium, the legendary bundle would essentially be buying the adventure bundle + 2 sourcebooks released after you bought the sourcebook bundle. If I'm wrong, you should probably talk to customer service directly and/or open a ticket under the bugs forum/

Total saved: $32.50
6 DMG
6 MM
5 Yawning

6 AI
6 Van Richten
Total saved: $35
That might be what it amounts to, yeah.
Let's take a look from a different angle. Based on the Legendary pricing you're being offered, you've already spent $375.65 on individual books
$64.97 of that was for adventures (based on that bundle's pricing), so $310.68 must have been on the various parts of the Sourcebook Bundle
Do those numbers match your purchase history?
Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock)
Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric)
Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue)
Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
