Without paying, you can still create characters using the basic rules. Also if there are specific things you want to create, you can just buy races and subclasses you want without buying whole books.
Im appreciative of you trying to help but if i could afford to just buy the things i wanted right now then i wouldn't have made this post. And being that im very new to DnD as a while im unsure of a lot of things. That being said coming into DnD without any knowledge of it, its very overwhelming. The step by step process begind uses is wonderful and keeps things simple. If somebody would be willing to share their books temporarily so that the characters could be designed itd be extremely helpful.
Have you found a group or is it just you and your friend so far? I only ask because if you have found a group to join it may be best to sit down with the dm and have him help you with character creation. It makes it much easier when working through it with someone. Another option would be to look into other 3rd party character creators that don't have the same monetary limitations as DDB. Otherwise, I'm happy to attempt to answer any specific questions you may have. At work currently so might not get answers quickly.
Ya could just use some of the free options, or use homebrew tools to add stuff.
You can play a game from 1st to 20th level entirely for free.

The Basic Rules & SRD is completely free, and includes 1 subclass for each class except Artificer, and a bunch of different races and spells. The EEPC is also completely free and includes a few additional races and a bunch more spells. Both resources are free to all DDB users, so you and your friend really can try the the game out for free here on DDB. Just head to the Character Builder and see or yourself what all options are already freely available to you.
If you are completely new to D&D and are just learning, then I strongly, highly, and greatly recommend you to stick with only the free options. In my opinion, it is best to learn to walk before you run, so if you are still learning how character creation works, then I do not think having access to loads of options is going to be helpful.
Until you have found a GM, I would also discourage you from making characters with the intent of actually playing them, since not all GMs allow all official options and many GMs put character restrictions in their campaign. If you do create a character you really like, just do not expect to be able to play them at any table, so it would be best to temper your expectations.
Also keep in mind that D&D can be played completely free. You do not need to spend a single penny on official D&D content, and there are plenty of free homebrew stuff out there.
