What are your thoughts on how the DnD Beyond version of Xanthar's Guide compares to the physical version of the book. I am torn between buying it on DnD Beyond vs getting the physical copy. Can anyone post a side by side comparison of a page or two?
The compendium in DDB doesn't have a "page" focus. You can look at the basic rules for an example of that. I have both the hard copy and the soft copy here. I like the physical book much more for extended reading, but I like the compendium version better for reference and preparation.
I actually like both. The physical one I like to read at home, and I access the electronic version on my iPad or phone at a Con - currently using the full web link vice the Beta App, but that will prob change.
If given a choice of one or the other - I go with physical, I am old school and book operate without electricity and without WifI.
Do you think will will use the listing tools (for spells, monsters, or magic items)? or the character builder? That's one huge advantage for me with having the content here. Instead of looking through several physical books for spells or monsters, I can look at one list--and I can filter extensively to find, say, for all the 3rd level spells that deal cold damage, or all the uncommon weapons.
Similarly, do you think you will use the character builder?
I really like the digital aspect and convenience that DnD Beyond provides, I just felt when reading through my content (DMG and PHB) that it was a bit spartan and I might be missing out on additional lore/fluff. An example would be when looking at a monster's info and it shows their stats and abilities but not much background information. Or do i just need to byu the monster manual content to see that?
If you are looking in the monster listing (Monsters>Official), then yes, you will only see the stat block. But the compendium portion of the Monster Manual (Compendium>Rules>Monster Manual) has the lore & fluff (for example, the lore about Drow Elves is found in the compendium, but not the monster listing)
In terms of Xanathar's specifically, all the text of the print version is there, including Xanathar's commentary
