What are people's thoughts on pre rolling stealth checks, deception checks, etc for NPCs? Should there be Passive Insight? Or are they just fooled if they don't ask to roll for Insight?
I don't pre-roll anything, I feel that it may present artificial limitations on what the NPC may or may not do.
As to the fooled or not, I use a bit of a sliding scale on social checks like insight. If the passive is close enough to the DC I may hint that something seems amiss. If they don't investigate further, that's on them.
The only thing I pre-roll for NPCs or monsters is initiative, and those aren't by monster. At the beginning of a session, I roll a handful of d20s and write down the results in order. Then when initiative is needed, I add the appropriate modifier. Speeds things up for me.
