I have not played any DnD since 3.5 edition. I would like to get back into playing again. How do I get in to a campaign and what do I need to do to get rolling as a returning player as well. Any help would be great.

You might also want to look at the Looking for Players & Groups forum to find someone to play with if no one is in your social circle.
Don't spend money on 5e until you have played 5e. Also note that the core rule books are being updated in less than a year and will replace the current rules. I would say if you play free for a bit of time, that should be enough time to tell you if you want to spend money on D&D in its current form.
Also, look into the Rules & Game Mechanics whenever you have questions. A lot of rules experts that post there so often, you wonder if they even have time to actually play the game. You'll get your answers quick.
If the new player guide link works for you, use that.
Beginner stuff, I know, but 5e is a very different game. They are currently doing "playtesting previews" of changes for the next "edition", they call One D&D, of which this site and the tools they are working on are a central piece. THink of this site as the proof of concept for what they are likely planning, starting late next year and the year after.
