Art by Wylie Beckert, who also did the alternate cover art for Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Polygon got the exclusive reveal; you can read the article here.
Gosh that Gold Dragon is just... amazing.

I think the regular cover is better, but I haven't really cared for most of the alternate covers. I am glad that they make them though.

They're both REALLY good in their own ways, and (not saying this is you) I know some folks prefer the uniformity of the regular covers and spines when looking at bookshelves.

Gorgeous! I love it!
I really like it, I prefer it to the standard one.
Sorry, I have to say, the positioning of the fighter is bugging me. The fighter is leaning against...air?
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
I think she's supposed to be leaning against the dragon, but I see what you mean.

That is definitely me lol.
Mother and Cat Herder. Playing TTRPGs since 1989 (She/Her)
I think that was the intent, but the dragon isn't where it needs to be for her to be doing that in a natural way, at least where she's sat. She needs to be basically where the right hand bowl is. As it is, she might be resting her left shoulder against it?
Odd thing to jump out at me, I know.

OR her body needs to be rotated so she's facing us a bit more directly.
i'm not gonna be able to unsee it, but it doesn't make me like it any less XD

Maybe she was leaning against the dragon but it had to move its head to heat the kettle (or maybe we're all overthinking this, lol).
Anyway, I prefer the action/epic feel of the standard cover but the coziness here is nice too (and boy the detail on the dragon is awesome).
For folks "meh" on the cover. In my experience these soft touch style covers, starting with Tasha, often look a heck of a lot better in person than they do online for some reason.
I think it's good, and probably one of the best alt covers in sort of connecting with the mainstream cover (adventurer and dragon). I also really like the emblem on the back cover, that's the sort of design graphic logo thing I was hoping we'd be seeing over 2024. I wish the barcode didn't cut in the way it does, but this is the world we live in and how books are stocked and sold.
Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
Gorgeous! I usually forego the alternate covers, since I like my books to match on the shelf, but this certainly has me tempted to change my ways.
Really interested in the fact the new PHBs depict an Eastern dragon, instead of the traditional European style that has historically graced D&D book covers. I know a lot of folks in the community have wanted for decades D&D to branch out a little more in its exploration other cultures - be it new planes or new continents on existing ones. Here’s hoping these covers portend some interesting things to come!
She's a fighter. She's clearly doing situps during their rest
Active characters:
Edoumiaond Willegume "Eddie" Podslee, Vegetanian scholar (College of Spirits bard)
Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric)
Peter "the Pied Piper" Hausler, human con artist/remover of vermin (Circle of the Shepherd druid)
PIPA - Planar Interception/Protection Aeormaton, warforged bodyguard and ex-wizard hunter (Warrior of the Elements monk/Cartographer artificer)
Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
The Rogue challenged her, lol.
Honestly, the more I look at it, I could make a case for her leaning back farther than one normally would, I suppose? Like the dragon is supporting just her upper back instead of her full back.

Is it just me or does the dragon spell out D&D if you squint?

Looks intentional to me. Nice touch.
I wonder if putting the title on the bottom of the book is going to be the new normal from now on. I guess it’d make sense for there to be some stylistic changes, but this one just feels so weird!

Agreed, I actually prefer the standard covers as well. Which is great since I also prefer getting the physical + digital DDB bundles online. (I'll still pick up the FLGS versions as occasional gifts for select friends though.)
That's just the Gold dragon design from AD&D 2e
