What it says on the Tin. We've had 40, 50 odd years of D&D plus other games inspired by it. So there ahve been plenty of races that have been enemies, NPC's and even PCs. So who would yu like to see make an entrence or a comback and why? Cool factor is perfectly ok.
Also if you don't know a name give a description.
I think they were introduced in 4th edition, maybe third, and I don't know the name. But they are basically living magic gemstones in a vaguely humanoid shape out on a mission. Technicly genderless, but they pick a general shape they like.

Shardmind. This would have been my answer to. Very interesting race.
Personally. I would love a 5.5e version of Tabaxi. Although I can still use the old version for 5.5e I still have to modify it.
Also want this. Yay Kitties! 😸

In general, I'd like to see more species options that don't use the Humanoid creature type. They seemed to be trending that way with the Eberron stuff, but I was a little disappointed the new versions of Dhampir and Reborn weren't Undead.
I just want Plants, more Oozes than just Plasmoids, & smaller species.
But 10+ years of mostly Human Fighters named Bob on DND Beyond(This is public information) convinced someone w/final cut power that Humanoids are the top priority.
If I had to pick an actual species Species..I wouldn't mind Shardminds, the missing types of Dragonborn(& the dragons connected to them as monsters), Mind Flayer Exiles, Pixies, Sprites, a retool of Spelljammer species+Dohwars, official Merfolk & Gnolls(As elementals & monstrosities, respectfully), re-integration of Half-Orcs in a way similar to how Half-Elves became Khoravar, & the resurrection of of Glitchlings & Aardlings from UA limbo.
(I may make a subclass thread to parallel this one)

Once made Maxwell's Silver Hammer come down upon Strahd's head to make sure he was dead.
Always study & sharpen philosophical razors. They save a lot of trouble.
Dryads, though I’m not sure if I’d want them realised as a nymph-like Fey creature or as a Plant creature - actually, let’s have both.
Dog-folk (the Lupin goes some way to that).
Bullywugs.
During the Monster Manual previews, they highlighted how they had made four species to be examples of humanoids that were strongly linked to the Elemental planes: Azers (fire), Merfolk (water), Aaracockra (air) and Lizardfolk (earth). I think of the Triton as the Merfolk substitute and we have that with the latter two in MotM. Could we have the Azer, please?
The Ravenloft species cover a lot of the classic Gothic horror monsters: vampires (Dhampir), werewolves (Lupin); hags (Hexblood) and various corporeal undead (Reborn), but we don’t have one to represent the incorporeal undead. Maybe a species with some limited ability to phase through walls or doors?

Shardminds, 4th Edition only. Yes would be nice to see them come back.
Honestly, I just want all the 5e Species updated for 5.5, espically Half-Elves, technically they are in Eberron:Forge of the Artificer under the name Khoravar, but that name is for Eberron only, it's like saying You can't be Human but you can be English. Yes technically the English are human, but what if you want to be Fench, German, or Scottish?

To be fair, it’s not tricky just to rename them as “half-elves” (or whatever else might be appropriate to your world), if you’re not playing in Eberron. That’s what I’ve done for my half-elf alchemist in our new Victorian Gothic-style campaign.
Going to also vote for Shardminds. 4e had a really cool mix of races, many of which deserve a revisit. Wilden (creatures from more wild parts of the Feywild), Hamadryads, Bladelings (creatures covered in spines). And, perhaps the most fun species I have ever played - the 4e Shade, which had racial abilities allowing you to continue to fight and get bonuses when under zero HP.. leading to some very high risk, high reward combats.
I think there is definitely room to expand in areas like this and I hope that some new options continue to get explored. I’d be disappointed in any book that only provides updates on the old.
It is also worth nothing that the “corporate is pushing humanoids” comment is transparently nonsense. 2024’s rules made a lot of prior humanoids non-humanoids, and every book contains non-humanoid options (we literally just got a book this week where the four species were two types of undead, a fey, and dog folk). It will never cease to amaze me how some people will try to shoehorn anti-Wizards conspiracy into literally any thread - even threads where the obvious facts disprove their point.
Ardlings. I wanted to see what they would do with Ardlings and their more templete style construction. Not replacing any other AnimalKin species, not as an excuse to do less unique things, I just kinda wanted to see them realized fully, even if they aren't allowed at a lot of tables.

I got the impression from some of the poll retrospective videos that Ardlings were pretty popular as a general concept, but the feedback Wizards received was “for our core set of species, we would like to see traditional D&D species get showcased, not something new.” I was left with the impression Ardlings were cut from the PHB for this reason, but it was more shelving them for a more appropriate book, rather than abandoning the concept entirely. So, not sure this is as unpopular an opinion as some seem to think.
I think we are long, long, long overdue for a setting book based in Egyptian mythology and would hope to see Ardlings return in a product like that. Seems pretty tailor made for such a setting.
(I recognize the usual “anti-furry” trolls were probably loudly whining online, but Wizards gave no impression they listened to that group and have not avoided furry races in 2024 like Shifters and Lupin, so I doubt that played any part in their decision.)
Also before another fight starts, the "Humanoid" tag has mechanical implications, so that is why many species have it. Hexbloods literally had mechanics applied to them that other species didn't because they had the Fey Creature tag as well as humanoid. They were affected by stuff like "Protection from good and evil" and would Ping Paladin's divine senses. Humanoid means you can be affected by hold person. Oozes like plasmoids RAW would be immune.
It is a rules consistency thing.

Har'Akir might have Egyptian influences, but those influences are more strongly associated with pulp adventure stories about travels to Egypt. Lost tombs, mummies, all that jazz. It is, after all, a horror setting, not a true celebration of Egyptian culture and mythology.
Something like Ardlings, which are rooted in Egyptian deities, deserve a setting where they are showcased not as part of a horror setting, but as a complex and deep pantheon with a rich and diverse history. Wizards already showed they could do this with Amonkhet - though Amonkhet, by virtue of its place in the lore, was fairly limited in scope and scale, and lacked some of the complexity I would want to see from a D&D setting.
I third the "More Egyptian type things" one of the players in my group has been using the limited Khaladesh thing they put out a while ago and he wants more than that.

It is supported by the data WotC has access to & has likely been consulting, namely, Beyond records.
I'm frustrated with consistent design defaults even in an age where they're veering from it, but I'm not explicitly against humanoids as a default. I just want a teensy bit more variety on top of what we already have.
Heck, I agree with you that Shardminds & the others you proposed are good choices.
