That is a misnomer. Books on shelves containing layers of compressed paper with little to no airflow won’t ignite until 451° F. Loose paper however ignites readily enough to be used as kindling.
If someone wants to use something that is not a weapon or shield as a weapon or shield, then it should not be as good as a standard weapon or shield.
If you can get a +2 bonus to AC by strapping a frying pan to your back, every warrior in your world should have a frying pan on their back. If it costs a few copper pieces and reduces the amount you get hit by 10%, expect every character in the party to do it.
Again, it's an improvised weapon as per the rules. Even comparing it to a club is silly. A frying pan is nowhere as effective as a purpose made club.

Keep in mind that a 10-inch cast iron skillet weighs about 5 lbs. That’s almost the same as a mace, but a smaller hit die (same as a club), and as an improv weapon there wouldn’t normally be proficiency on the attack roll.
As Armor, it would take around three dozen skillets to offer the same area coverage as plate, but with a much lower AC calculation. Something akin to ring mail (at best), but weighing almost 200 lbs. It’s hard to imagine something more inferior than that. 😂😂
Personally I wouldn’t treat it as a tool being improvised as a weapon for combat. I would treat it mechanically as a mace the character can cool with for RP.
hmmmm what about a crockpot where would that fall under? would it be a beefy shield or a pretty good helmet??
Depends on the cut of beef. I mean you're average roast, most steaks or just some burgers you're basically talking full plate. If you're talking like a whole side or even a full rib rack, probably shield or helmet level protection. I'll leave it to you how the beef has proficiency with armor but there's a scene in both the film and novel of John Dies at the End that could give you some ideas.

"Also, still no facing rules. Been mentioned a few times now." Well this makes it easy. No penalty to me, no bonus. Not interested in a cheesy advantage as long as the GM doesn't tell me there's an issue with which way the equipped shield is facing that penalizes me. I apologize for not seeing the facing rules thing before-- thanks, that's good to know.
I do really like the possibility of making the cast-iron skillet the shield, somehow, someday, but for now, it's just fun that with some modifications, it can double as a standard shield.
"You are describing getting a shield bonus with your hands empty." No.
"To my knowledge, you can't stack shields, so there would only be his standard AC of 16 (including shield)" As I said, since the parallel of an iron-cast skillet and a shield was made, the shield bonus has been a moot point. My character already has a shield in his hands; this was about seeing if the skillet could provide any additional protection, but there's no issue if there's no advantage to a rear attack. As long as I stay at my AC of 16, I'm a happy kobold.

I made a version of this, the Cast Iron +1, used club and improvised weapons for it.
Weapon (club), uncommon
You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
As a thrown weapon, Cast Iron has a range of 20ft and a long range of 60ft.
Proficiency with a club allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
